      The Story:

An exceptionally rare and deeply desirable collector's item, this one of a kind cigar cutter hails from the second half of Queen Victoria's reign. This little accessory boasts functionality as boldly as it does its aesthetic appeal, and is a relic of a specific window in history, as it is believed to date to the 1870s at the very earliest. This date coincides with one of the earliest records of a cigar-punching device from 1868, a record established just after the publication of Frederick William Fairholt's 1859 first edition book Tobacco: Its History and Associations, which itself, also describes a similar knife-cutter for cigars.

Enhancing this piece's roots in historical context is its unparalleled beauty: this matte gold accessory is dotted with a perimeter of finely raised repoussé demi-domed metalwork, which creates a traces both sides of the piece and perfectly frames the iconic fleur-de-lis design on one side and a pair of beautifully engraved initials on the other. Fashioned with three radiant gems of bright color, the stylized flower is geometrically grounded by a diamond-cut 'stem' to the lily form, which catches the light in suit with the gems and beaming gold finish. From the topmost leaf beams a bright and sparkly Old Mine Cut diamond, while the left leaf holds a ruby-red paste, and the right leaf holds a sapphire-blue paste. Selected as alternatives to untreated ruby and sapphire, these gems certainly do not disappoint, and brightly exude color and sparkle with every move.

The Victorians are a venerated people within storied jewelry history, as they are known for their creative interpretations of stylistic elements, attributing symbolism to every last detail. In sum, every article, every pattern, every motif, design and emblem could be woven together and 'read' to reveal the depths of their deliberate significance. This piece can be read in this way, and offers loads of meaning of its own:

      • The¬†repouss√©eended to impart a feeling of strength and unyielding perseverance.
      • The fleur-de-lis¬†is French in origin, and is an artistically simplified¬†variation of¬†a budding lily flower. It symbolizes holiness and royalty, telling the wearer her status as a daughter of God, and signifying this status as constant no matter her choices or direction.¬†Its silhouette resembles a foliate cross, communicating the abiding and fruitful life of abundance and reward that may be found in faith, while the belt projects the notion of passionate loyalty in the security of relationships.¬†This form also historically¬†represents¬†the Holy Trinity as an emblem of perfect unity and purity. As such, the fleur-de-lis has become associated with partnership, dedicated affection and growth.¬†
      • Finally, the gemstones add yet another layer to the story:¬†diamonds represent fortitude and strength, time-forged beauty and the constance of¬†fidelity of the heart. Rubies and red¬†paste represent fiery passion and affection, while sapphires and blue paste relate to royalty and spiritual superiority. Indeed, every element herein speaks to the cherished aesthetic and historic power of this astounding palm-sized, functional and¬†dazzling heirloom.
Whether a striking statement pendant gracing any chain, or a highly collectible conversation piece added to any collection, this bespoke late Victorian fob is virtually one of a kind, distinct in its appearance, design, condition, symbolism, functionality and rarity. It is as charming as it is useful, as lovely as it is clever, and as special today as the day it was first beheld by its original owner.

      About Bloomed Gold:

Enhancing the fob's appearance is its identifiably satiny, the effect of a bloomed gold finish. Blooming is a finishing technique applied to fine jewelry with its origins purported to be in 1853, and its popularity highest between the 1870s and 1890s. In the blooming process, the gold piece is dipped within a mix of muriatic acid, potassium nitrate, salt and water, causing the alloyed components of the gold compound to delicately burn away, leaving a very fine surface layer of pure (24k purity) karat gold. The burning procedure leaves micro-pitting in the surface of the piece, giving it its identifiably soft, subtle textural appearance. The texture achieved is an exceptionally bright, golden and of a matte quality, as pictured.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
