  • Markings: This ring is extremely special for its Chester assay mark. The Chester mark is identified by its shield cartouche in which a roundel of three wheat sheaves punctuate a central sword. The Chester office closed in 1962, making pieces marked by this long-obsolete origin of utmost collectibility. As such, Chester-marked jewels always demand a more notable premium given their scarcity and desirability. Beyond this mark, there is a number “9” within a cut-corner cartouche, followed by a corresponding “·375” also within a cut-corner cartouche, together indicating the ring’s 9k gold content. The related date letter mark is polished away from wear and use, it is either the letter “G” for 1890, “O” for 1897, or “Q” for 1899. The ring’s style, construction, materials and purity, and aesthetic lead us to believe it dates to 1899. Similar in condition, a very obscured maker’s mark is also polished away from wear, and is no longer able to be identified. Oftentimes, rings like this were inscribed with personal sentiments, lovers’ initials or meaningful dates. This ring is left uninscribed, also a relatively unusual characteristic.
  • Era: This ring is believed to date to the final decade of the 19th century, circa 1890-1899. It is a fine example of late Victorian design, as the Victorian era concluded in 1901 when Queen Victoria passed. However, beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enable us to determine, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range or history than this without knowledge of the piece’s exact provenance.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring is a very special find as a modest collector’s piece from the last year(s) of the 1800s. It is imbued with sweetness, a ladylike adornment with cheerful artfulness and heavenly colors. A perfect stacking band, midi ring or pinky ring, this piece is a glimpse of a bygone era, offering timeless style and elegance.

The Story:

A true Victorian treasure, this band exudes the romanticism that dominated the era’s aesthetics. It is fabricated in a warm rose gold and features a spread of ethereal gemstones that span the face of the band, and while appearing relatively flush-set, actually add a wonderful dimensionality to the ring. Three opals and four pearls are set within decorative mountings with tiny bead prongs, the opals within modified diamond-shaped settings and the pearls within modified triangle-shaped settings. Though this ring is believed to date to the late 1890s, its settings recall both the Gothic Revival styles of the 1860s and the Archeological Revival styles of the 1870s.

The ring’s center opal is an oval cabochon of modest height and an abundance of fire. In typical indoor incandescent light, it appears as a very light sky blue-whitish, while in indoor LED light, it appears a slightly richer blue with variations of color even more evident. When viewed in natural sunlight, the chroma of the stone explodes into a rainbow of otherworldly jewel tones of violet to electric blue, magenta to apricot, and golden yellow to flashes of lime green. From every angle, the wearer is gifted a lively new color story, all with cooler undertones that offer a sultry contrast to the warmth of the pinkish gold backdrop. This opal shows signs of crazing upon 60x-90x magnification (pictured), a very common occurrence in these softer gems, and though certainly worthy of mentioning, does not render the stone any less magical. For a dainty-scaled stone, this featured opal has a very animated play of color.

The side opals are lovely complements to the central opal, with subtler colorations and more petite scales. Both are round cabochons, one being nearly even with the plane of the ring and one sitting proud of the ring’s surface. The latter is quite interesting, exhibiting what looks like a horizontal divide of color, one half colorful and the other consisting of the organic milky-white potch that comes from the opal’s original host rock. All three opals proudly manifest their own characteristics, granting this band a wholly unique charm.

The pearls are equally individual, and reveal some of the transitional history of the ring. Three of the four pearls are natural cultured pearls, each one showing a lightly textured surface that hallmarks their organic origins. The fourth appears to be a possible later replacement and is not cultured. Though perhaps not original to the ring’s make, it seems to be a historic replacement possibly dating to the beginning of the Edwardian period, which would have been the first couple of years of the ring’s life. Under magnification, this early replacement pearl is somewhat smoother and whiter in undertone, though fits right in with the company of the originals pearls.

These seven gems are delicate in nature, and are entirely closed back, as seen on the inside of the shank. Indeed, opals and pearls are more delicate gems, as all opals have a Mohs hardness of 5-6.5 and all pearls have a Mohs hardness of 2.5-3. While this general knowledge should be kept in mind by shoppers, it simply means that the next caretaker of this band should enjoy this ring with appropriate care regarding its 120+ year age and loving use. A turn of the century jewel with iconic Victorian taste, this piece is a great addition to any collection being that its very rare Chester assay mark is, arguably, its most special feature. This band feels whimsical and celestial, its colors as inspiring as the historic context from which the ring emerges.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.
