  • Markings: This ring is not marked.
  • Era: This diamond ring is believed to date to the earliest years of the 20th century, specifically from between 1900-1920. It exhibits the traits of Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and liberal Edwardian design.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring is a wonderful example of Art Nouveau design, with an emphasis on thoughtful composition, natural inspiration and feminine curvatures. Its materialities and components render it a somewhat curious jewel, yet also add to its intrigue and wonder. The face of the ring is modeled in silver, and backed/shanked with 14k yellow gold. The piece boasts a time-earned patina that is considered quite desirable by collectors, and so has been left exactly as-is. This patina and light oxidization may be buffed and polished away by the next caretaker if so desired. Keep in mind each diamond’s individuality and note that no two diamonds are matched; this ring was designed to have variances amongst stones so as to celebrate their singular characters. A perfect pinky or midi ring at its current smaller size, this ring may most certainly be enlarged post-purchase to suit another finger. It is an heirloom piece with over 120 years of history exuding from every angle, every curve and every facet.

The Story:

In historic glory, this romantic and storied jewel hails from the early 20th century. The ring is primarily fabricated in 14k yellow gold, while its face is topped in silver, a common choice for jewelry from the 18th century Georgian years through the turn of the 20th century. In effect, the silver proved a more durable material for the face of jewelry, as silver is slightly less ductile and impressionable than gold. Additionally, silver set gems have a brighter visual appearance than those set in gold, given that gold can optically warm up diamonds’ colors. As such, it is very common to find historic jewelry that boasts this metal duality.

The ring is designed in a vertical orientation, the composition nearly spanning knuckle to knuckle. A trilogy of primary diamonds centers the design, the diamonds arranged in graduated order from smallest to largest. The heights of these three diamonds is contiguous with their sizing order, with the largest diamond peaking at the tallest height above the finger. The two larger diamonds of the three are mounted within substantial bezel settings, while the smallest of the three is held with delicate prongs as if a rosette window atop a double-arched pane. Similarly, the two outermost diamonds that bookend this central sparkly spine are prong set as well.

The shapeliness of the ring is modeled in the aesthetic tastes of the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil designs that were sweeping decorative, fine and building arts at the end of the 1800s and into the nascent years of the 1900s. This creative movement may have lasted less than two decades, but its artful influence has remained remarkably strong across all kinds of creative fields; the bold and sinuous linearities recall curves found in Mother Nature, and elevate organicism to the forefront of elegance. History places this ring’s origin at the turn of the century, though the diamonds present appear to have mostly been replaced since then. Save for the Swiss cut, the faceting matrices of all the diamonds date to the 1920s or later. We may never know the reason for this discrepancy, though its mysteriousness is just as compelling as the firecracker light the diamonds emanate.

As is true of Art Nouveau jewelry silhouettes, the outline of this ring takes cues from the form of insects, wings and budding flowers. A stretch of the Nouveau movement preferred the serendipitous asymmetry of nature over the man-made precision of symmetry, and this ring’s composition presents itself as symmetrical from east to west and asymmetrical from north to south. This being so, it may be flipped to enjoy at either orientation, gifting the wearer options. The piece’s shoulders are pinched where they flank the silver face, and softly reverse-taper toward the base of the shank. This ring is exceptionally elegant, and simply exudes soulful whimsy characteristic of a bygone era and its hushed chapters we will never know.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
