General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: Professionally estimated 0.88 ctw (inclusive of all stones present)
  • Precious Metal Weight: The rose gold and diamond-set shamrock top portion is estimated to be approximately 0.40 dwt (the clutch back safety chain component is not included in this weight given its non-gold composition)
  • Precious Metal Material: 10k antique rose gold (historic golds under 14k were made of alloyed gold that caused it to be quite pink in appearance, so today we refer to these extremely warm golds as rose or rosy gold).
  • Dimensions: The rose gold and diamond-set top portion measures about 9.35 mm north to south x about 9.05 east to west x 3.35 mm deep not including the stem pin. The stem pin measures 11.50 mm long 1.15 mm thickness. The clutch back’s safety chain measures about 40 mm long and its affixed t-bar toggle measures 25.23 mm long x 2.72 mm wide x 1.30 mm thick/deep.
  • Weight: The rose gold and diamond-set top portion weighs about 0.60 grams, while this portion plus the clutch back safety chain together weigh 2.83 grams.
  • Markings: No markings are present on this piece, which is very typical of pieces of this age and delicate scale, though it has been tested and verified.
  • Era: The rose gold and diamond-set top portion is believed to date to between 1870 and 1900, while the non-gold clutch back safety chain portion is believed to be a later addition for added security. This latter addition could date to anywhere between the 1930s and the 21st century, as a slightly more primitive version of this closure mechanism was patented in 1921.
  • Buyer Notes: Prospective buyers, please note that the three diamonds show natural carbon specks and some nibbling on their girdles here and there. One diamond also has a chip where it was originally clutched by one of its claw prongs. Such imperfections are absolutely to be expected of antique jewelry and are commensurate with the piece’s age and affectionate use, and though are not noticeable to the eye when worn, are noted for the sake of transparency. This tie tack is a beautiful example of late 19th century shamrock motif jewelry, which was enjoyed and worn by both men and women. This piece is bright and fiery, regardless of its natural inclusions, and is truly an eye catching spectacle for its size. While most pieces of this kind were converted long ago, this one remains just as it was first designed. A very fine relic of the tail end of the Victorian era, this pin is a sweet little treasure.

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Diamond
  • Center Stone Count: Three (3)
  • Center Stone Carat Weight: Corresponding to the dimensions below and calculated by formula per the specific gravity of diamonds and the table ratio of Old Mine Cuts, the first diamond is 0.231 ct, the second diamond is 0.38 ct, and the third diamond is 0.267 ct. Keep in mind that the formulaic carat weights of Old Mine Cuts are SIGNIFICANTLY different than modern Round Brilliant Cuts due to the older cuts’ uniquely broader, taller, and spreadier faceting matrices. As such, the modern millimeter to carat weight calculations come out to much lower carat weight totals than that of Old Mines. It is important to understand that older cuts are much heftier in ctw than newer cuts, even if the two kinds share the same or similar dimensions to the eye.
  • Center Stone Dimensions: The first diamond measures 4.03 x 3.98 x 2.30 mm, the second diamond measures 3.58 x 3.80 x 3.50 mm, and the third diamond measures 3.61 x 3.90 x 2.73 mm.
  • Center Stone Shape: Old Mine Cut (cut and faceted by hand between 120 and 150 years ago, giving each stone an irregular, subtly non symmetrical appearance with chunky facets and open culets; one stone has a chip under a prong).
  • Center Stone Color: J-K
  • Center Stone Clarity: SI2-I1 (natural carbon speckling is present, commonly referred to as “salt & pepper”, which are beloved characteristics and denote the diamond’s history without diminishing the piece’s sparkle at all).

The Story:

Hailing from the last decades of the 19th century at the end of the Victorian era, this tie tack explodes into fabulous sparkles with every turn and glance. It features an utterly astounding trio of Old Mine cut diamonds that proudly display their hand cut and hand faceted origins in their forms. Such antique diamonds are much beloved for their delightfully chunky faceting matrices, where broad plans are cut in irregular patterns, rendering no two old cuts the same. Under a jeweler’s loupe, these hand fabricated details come to life, and to the unaided eye, they simply burst like little firecrackers.

These three diamonds all have tiny carbon speckles throughout, some with less and some with more. These velvety flecks are Mother Nature’s fingerprints on the diamonds, hallmarks of their organic origins having developed in the stones during their billions of years-long formation. Inclusions are characteristic of natural diamonds, and while not as desirable in new cuts, those who faceted the old cuts masterfully camouflaged such dotting with the blaze of facets within the stone. Despite the inclusions, the Old Mine faceting geniusly makes the diamonds profoundly more sparkly than they would be if they were modern cuts. As such, this diamond jewel is a vividly fiery, superb example of antique technique and fashion.

This piece is designed as a tie tack or cravat pin, meant to hold a gentleman’s necktie in place. However, it may very easily dress one’s jacket lapel or shirt collar secured as needed with the t-bar toggle at the end of the clutch back’s safety chain. Modern wearing of brooches is coming back in style, and this little pin offers a very refined, very sophisticated presentation of the trend. Its scale is dainty, but its design is striking, and it would make for a wonderful ring, charm or earring should a conversion be desired. With no shortage of character, this diamond pin offers good looks, rich history and exciting symbolism-- a feature of jewelry very intentionally imbued within Victorian-era ornaments:

The shamrock is a well known symbol for good fortune, though when designed with three leaves as we see in this pin, it symbolically conveys the traits of loyalty, amiability, integrity, muliebrity and fecundity. St. Patrick is a common association of the shamrock, and the plant is also believed to be a metaphor for the mystery of the Holy Trinity, in which God is also Spirit and Savior, a perfect triune that shows God as a father, a friend and a bridge. Shamrocks are protective amulets, guarding the wearer from harm and suffering, while also bestowing grace and honor to the wearer. These amalgamated symbolisms cascade from this pin, as the shamrock’s stem winds around as if freshly plucked from the earth. These plants remind us that the divine is a living essence indwelling in all beings, while diamonds represent fortitude and strength, time-forged beauty and consistent fidelity of the heart.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
