General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: Professionally estimated by formula to be approximately 0.126 ctw (breakdown below)
  • Total Precious Metal Weight: 0.70 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: Head tests for 15-16k yellow gold and stem tests for 10-12k rose gold
  • Dimensions: 53.37 mm overall length; head is 10.28 mm long x 8.62 mm wide x 4.86 mm deep
  • Weight: 1.09 grams
  • Markings: A partially obscured purity mark exists to the horseshoe’s reverse, though only “CT” is legible, indicating karat purity. This portion of the pin (the head) tests for 15-16k yellow gold, while the stem tests for 10-12k rose gold. The variance in gold purities is not uncommon for stick pins, though it is possible that the stem is a replacement for an earlier original.
  • Era: This piece is believed to date to the late 19th century, placing it at circa 1870-1900 according to stylistic and construction research. However, beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enable us to determine, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range or history than this without knowledge of the piece’s exact provenance.
  • Buyer Notes: This stick pin is a colorful and cheerful variation of the common horseshoe and shamrock themed jewelry. The pairing of such themes, such as is seen here, was common during the last couple of decades of the 19th century, and jewelry bearing both is considered collectible today. In assessing the construction of this pin, please note that the very top of the stem pin shows solder where it was affixed to the head, though this is not at all visible when worn. Further, the stem pin evidences a likely repair completed at some point in the piece’s history long ago. Likewise, a small trace of solder exists between the shamrock’s stem (hooked onto the horseshoe) and the top of the horseshoe where the elements meet, but is also totally invisible when worn. While the pin appears to be a trio consisting of a sapphire, ruby and emerald, the pink stone tests for pink spinel on our shop equipment. This piece is wearable as is, or ready for your dream conversion project. Ultra delicate, this classic Victorian motif is worthy of any collection.

The Story:

A sweet talisman for luck and blessings, this late Victorian stick pin dates to about 1870-1900, and features a trio of candy-colored gemstones set into two-tone gold. The head of the pin is fashioned as a dimensional upside-down horseshoe, punctuated with grooves and curves that recall actual horseshoes after which the pin is modeled. Centering this motif is a three-leaf shamrock, complete with a stem hooked around the top arch of the horseshoe. The bodies of the shamrocks’ leaves are studded with the gems, adding vivid coloration to the aesthetic.

The horseshoe motif has long been popular as a symbol of both fortune and protection, two themes that have influenced jewelry for thousands of years. During the Victorian period, novelty and sporting jewelry grew to popularity as early as the first quarter of the 19th century, and by the 1870s, they were a dominant favorite by ladies and gentleman consumers alike. Horseshoes were meant to allude to the support of equestrian sports just as much as they conveyed good fortune, leaning most often toward the latter as the Victorian era drew to a close.

It is believed that the horseshoe can both gather and bestow luck; when worn ‘U’-shape up, the talisman catches good fortune for its wearer, and when worn ‘U’-shape down, it is thought to bless others with luck and protection, both friends and strangers alike. The emblem is not relevant solely to equestrians, as its illustrative meaning benefits all with favor and good will. Horseshoe jewelry was typically gifted as a celebratory gesture, intended as a blessing over the recipient.

The Victorians are heralded for their deep and wide-ranging symbolic associations evoked through jewelry. Every element, gemstone, design choice and motif carried with it a wealth of symbolism, and this stick pin is no exception: sapphires represent divine wisdom and holiness, as well as royal status and fortified intuition; pink spinels represent positive energy and self confidence; and emeralds represent spiritual protection, prolonged life and heightened self awareness.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods.
