The Story:

Singular in every way, this ring features a mix of history and modernity: the featured gem is a created moissanite fit within a cool yellow gold mounting that is believed to date to between 1900 and 1930, showing characteristics of the end of the Victorian period, some of which timelessly persisted well into the late Deco years. The mounting boasts an eye-catching nature-inspired claw prong design set to the cardinal points, the north and south prongs showing an opened ‘fingerlike’ grip, and the east and west prongs a closed cusping of the edges of the stone.

These prongs appear as foliate as they do pelagic; they can be perceived as either unfurling acanthus leaves or the opened palm of a scallop shell. Both naturalistic references derive from the Rococo Movement that flourished during the earliest decade of the 18th century, and both forms are sensual and tactile, conveying a message of affectionate tenderness, and fidelity in partnership. The early decades of the 20th century, to which this mounting dates, saw a surge in Revivalist trends, carried over from the end of the 19th century, when archaeological re-discoveries revived interests in non-western cultures and themes, including interests in ancient Greek, Roman, Near Eastern and Egyptian worlds. Such inspiration of both the Rococo dynamism and Revivalism appears here, a notable mix of motifs indeed, especially when paired with such a chic choice as the modern moissanite.

Moissanites have been an excellent sustainable option to diamonds since 1893 when the mineral was discovered in a meteorite-caused crater in Arizona. Moissanites are naturally-occurring and found in small quantities in the Earth, though newer moissanites are grown in labs to preserve what deposits still remain in nature. In the case of this ring, the mounted moissanite are created, as they are later additions to this converted piece. While moissanites today can be grown in nearly any color, their creation process causes them to typically grow in the light green-bluish color family, of which the present moissanite identifies. Many colored moissanites appear to almost bear a super subtle haze (by comparison to perfectly clear and colorless stones), also shown here. Yet, this chroma is both bright and moody, an intriguing depth and variance that places it in its own category of glamor.

Moissanites are oftentimes mistaken for diamonds as their hardness, molecular makeup, and appearance can be nearly identical. Moissanites have a refractive index of 2.65 (versus diamonds at 2.42), a Mohs hardness of 9.25 (versus diamonds at 10). Even some contemporary diamond testing technology can have trouble distinguishing the difference between the two. Interestingly, moissanites rate higher than diamonds in both hardness and brilliance, meaning that they are far more durable and often sparklier than traditional diamonds. Because of these characteristics, moissanites are considered eco-friendly and are inherently conflict-free, making them incredibly desirable by the eco-conscious. These stones have long been circulating and adored as economical and sustainable alternatives to natural diamonds. This means that moissanites are just as wearable and just as impressive as diamonds, and can be obtained at a much more wallet-friendly value.

With an exquisite low profile and spready appearance on the finger, this ring showcases both its unique and interwoven history as well as its truly unparalleled color. This piece maintains its dual identities as a Victorian mounting and a contemporary stone, making it equally modern and sustainable. The moissanite is substantial and fascinatin, and appears to vary in undertone depending on the context and lighting. Great as a one of a kind engagement ring for the nontraditional bride or as an extraordinary statement ring for occasional wear, this stunner is utterly captivating.
