  • Buyer Notes: This ring is an insanely rare find, and though it is very fragile and not ideal for everyday wear, it is a highly collectible diamond Georgian half hoop that is desirable by collectors. As mentioned, its foiled and closed back setting, as well as the condition of the original diamonds render it incompatible with water and best enjoyed from a protected and preserved position. The delicacy and exceptional rarity of this ring cannot be overstated. Please keep in mind that the unpolished and time-earned patinaed surface quality of this ring is considered extremely valuable by collectors, and has, thus, been left untouched. In purchasing this ring, you understand and accept that this ring shows wear, the diamonds show fracturing, and the aged historic construction techniques render it VERY fragile. Although the ring is considered relatively stable at the time of this listing, its condition is not guaranteed once it leaves our shop. This ring is not intended for everyday wear the way a more modern diamond band would be, and casual wear is not recommended without risking further deterioration. Please do not purchase under the impression that this diamond band is suitable for routine use! It is an historic hierloom, and it is our knowledgeable and practical advice that it be enjoyed as a safeguarded curiosity rather than freely and frequently worn. This is a collector’s item more than it is an accessory. Like all antiques, this ring is sold as-is.

The Story:

Dating to the second half of the 1700s, this incredible Georgian diamond ring is known as a “half hoop”, indicating that half of the hoop bears gemstones. These diamonds are all full of character and uniqueness, as they were all cut, faceted and polished by the hand of an artisan around 250 years ago. Thus, these diamonds are wholly individual, and being that they were not cut by machines, they are truly the only ones of their kind in existence.

This ring centers a beautifully cut pear shaped Rose Cut diamond, which features the greatest height of all diamonds that adorn this piece. Either side of this center stone is flanked by a pair of modified Rose Cuts, verging on Macle Cuts, which show less angled faceting and an overall flatter surface. These five main diamonds total a modest 0.16 ctw but have the appearance of roughly 0.86 ctw in their spread and face size. Surrounding these five primary diamonds are eight more petite Rose Cuts which offer subtle sparkles to offset the larger gems.

All the diamonds are designed to be on one half of the band, within the sterling silver face. This face is closed backed, meaning that no light passes into and through the diamonds to refract light. Instead, these diamonds are all foiled on their reverse. Both Rose Cuts and foiling were techniques designed specifically to catch the twinkle of candlelight, the foiling catching the light and reflecting within the stone. The metallic nature of both characteristics ethereally shoot light across and out of the stones, visually saturating the pieces with a spectrum of moody earth tones.

The face of the ring is an east-west oriented trefoil shape, something of a graduated and undulating silhouette. Yet, the ring hugs the finger in low profile practicality. Likewise, the diamonds are quite shallow by nature of their cuts, cleverly giving them larger visual appearances than their true carat weights. Multiple diamonds show fracturing that is commensurate with the ring’s very old age and lifetimes of unknown stories. Even so, these diamonds do appear stable within their mounts, and neither move when touched with the fingertip, nor affect the beauty of the ring in any way.

Georgian diamond bands are extremely rare acquisitions, but Georgian diamond bands with such an interesting aesthetic and dramatic presentation are, by far, even rarer. Given this, we have opted to offer this special heirloom jewel for sale regardless of its fragile condition, knowing that so few, if any, comparables enter the open market for sale. It should be noted that this ring’s foiling renders it incompatible with water and should like all foiled gems, therefore, not get wet. The pre-loved and storied state of the diamonds also designate this half hoop as best kept for special occasions only, and makes it most ideal as an addition to a historic jewelry collection largely enjoyed visually.

This ring not only exudes another era, by feels downright otherworldly. It is as delicate as it is powerful, as minimal as it is bold, and is a bewitching reminder of the love stories of generations past. This piece’s moody air defines its quality, and its peculiar complexion dazzles as truly extraordinary amongst antique 18th century adornments.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
