General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: 0.14 ct
  • Precious Metal Weight: Approx. 1.41 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: Tested on our gold tester to be 9k yellow gold bar brooch body with gilt base metal stem pin; 18k-24k yellow gold claw component; 14k yellow gold safety chain including clip and miniature safety pin and both end jump rings
  • Dimensions: 38.70 mm long x 5.80 mm deep including stem pin; claw is 11.51 mm tall x 5.72 mm wide x 5.29 mm deep; safety chain is 67.00 mm long including both jump rings but not including clip or safety pin on either end
  • Weight: 2.18 grams
  • Markings: 9CT WHH (in cartouche) on back of bar pin indicating that the brooch itself was created by the well known Birmingham and Hatton Garden (London Jewelry District) based jewelry house “W.H. Haseler & Co.” which was established around 1849 and operated primarily through 1899. The style of this pin tells us that it likely dates to the early-middle window of time within this range.
  • Era: Estimated to date to around 1870, which is mid to late Victorian during the height of the Etruscan Revival surge that brought with it “exotic” themes from the Middle East and Africa, and revivals of, and inspirations from, ancient fashion styles and fabrication methods for jewelry. This includes, as well, the incorporation of mythological motifs such as the griffin.
  • Buyer Notes: A wholly unique jewel, this piece is exemplary of the fashions of its era and boasts a lovely diamond of handcut origins. It is rare and hallmarked, its story as intriguing as its detail. This brooch is wearable as is or would make an excellent conversion project. The clip that hooks the safety chain to the brooch body does not quite close all the way anymore, but is not open enough to risk falling off. Please reference all supplied photographs for all conditional factors, as photos are considered a continuation of the description.

The Story:

Decidedly Victorian, this antique bar brooch is elegant and smart, originally intended for wear horizontally at the neckline. The focal point of the brooch is the centered talon foot, set on an axis for added interest.

Within the claws is a gingerly clutched Old Mine diamond stone, hand cut over a century and a half ago. Its broad, irregular faceting matrix dances within the stone, refracting rainbows like a firecracker. Equally striking is that the feathered game’s grip is either that of an eagle or perhaps a fantastical griffin. Its hand finished engraving is as exceptionally detailed as the stone, drawing the eye in dramatic fashion.

Diamonds have long been considered symbols of tender affection, transparent and bright just as lovers’ words. Their brilliance alludes to purity and pursuit of perfection, which has awarded such stones homes in engagement rings. The clawed figural component could either be an eagle or griffin, and appears dynamic and powerful. Eagles have been regarded as symbols of governance, order and regality; their ability to truly soar has matched their value to that of the gods, their ability to reach the heights a sign of their connectivity to the heavens. Across religions, time and cultures, the eagle has earned a place of reverence, and has forever been perceived as an intercessory of prayer, a protective agent and an appointed being by the divine. Accordingly, the griffin, which is a fusion of both an eagle and a lion, embodies these same admirable attributes.

While this piece is wildly chic, it appears that the claw itself was not original to the bar brooch body, but was later affixed at some point in the brooch’s history. Likewise, the safety chain appears to also be an historic addition. Although these summations are technically inconclusive, tools such as our history expertise, jewelry applications knowledge, and professional research evidence that this unusual jewelry item is composed of multiple elements: the claw feature tests for very high karat gold between 18k-24k; brooch body is stamped as 9CT indiciated 9 karat gold, and tests for between 9-11k though the attached (and original) stem pin is gilt base metal; the safety chain and its components including the jump rings, clip and miniature safety pin all test for 14k gold.

This brooch is noteworthy for its craftsmanship and amalgamated history, as it exists as virtually one of a kind, with no exact comparables on the market. These kinds of diamond-centered claw jewelries are becoming increasingly difficult to procure, making this item one of much extreme rarity and immense desirability. Its Victorian symbolism intrinsically seals the piece with a rich narrative and much meaning.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
