- Precious Metal Weight: 1.67 dwt
- Precious Metal Material: 10-12k rose gold
- Dimensions: 39.55 mm long north to south (including the top loop and attached jump ring) x 22.75 mm wide east to west x 3.45 mm deep
- Weight: 2.59 grams
- Markings: None, but tested to confirm between 41.7% and 49.6% gold content, making it between 10-12k rose gold purity.
- Era: Authentic Victorian antique; matches styles dating to the Gothic Revival years of the 1860s-1870s, though its construction techniques, design elements and fabrication match catalog references dating to between the 1890s and early years of the 1900s. Therefore, we estimate that this piece dates to between 1890-1900. However, without knowing an exact provenance, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enables us to determine.
- Buyer Notes: This piece is a wonderful example of late Victorian religious jewelry, and stands out on the market for the charming face engraved at the cross’ center. The pendant shows areas of wear commensurate with the piece’s historic age and affectionate use: where the construction elements are joined, there is some patina at their seam lines, while the top loop region shows imperfection. There is a tiny smaller-than-pinpoint sized indentation on the side of the cross, which is not visible when worn or noticeable when handled, but is worth noting. Finally, the back-bottom corner of the base arm of the cross has been abraded to a point where the corner is flattened. Similarly, this is not visible when worn but is worth noting. This piece is highly collectible, a lovely rose gold hue and presents a symbolic narrative within its hand-finished craftsmanship.
Masterfully hand-engraved with foliate patterns, this rose gold cross is a sizable pendant that appears to be made of assembled construction giving it hollow interior, rather than being entirely solid. This construction method can be perceived in the photos provided. This make is clever, as it means a much more comfortable, lighter weight wear. The front of the cross is ornately designed, while the reverse is left entirely plain. The top loop is ever so slightly off-center, as pictured, which is a kind of charming imperfection often found within heirloom jewels. The piece does not have hallmarks present, which is not unusual for antique pieces. Even so, its fabrication, gold content, hand-engraved motif, and more, all match jewelry exhibited within catalogs dating to the 1890s-1900s.
This pendant is an excellent example of late 19th century design, the face of this Latin style cross covered in engraving. Every stroke of the etched motif beautifully, catching the light and proudly emphasizing etchwork. Within the very center, a gargoyle face can be seen, which is merely a protective force that safeguards the wearer and reminds one of faith’s vigilance. Framing this face are sprawling acanthus blooms. Throughout art and decorative art history, cymas and billowing acanthus themes have been long been incorporated into spiritual depictions: acanthus leaves embody the idea of eternalism, as the plants are known for thriving in graceful immortality even within the harshest conditions and withstanding beating winds, rains and sun. The acanthus is a deeply symbolic form that has been used for thousands of years across multiple cultures and peoples, as a representation of abundant life and rebirth for their unique ability to thrive even in the most trying of conditions.
When coupled with the significance of the cross, the pendant’s message is clear. This piece is not only a depiction of the joy and abundance of God’s grace, but also a reminder of the beauty and perseverance of creation. This pendant would have likely been first crafted to mark a special occasion, and is as perfect for gifting today as it was the day it was first created.

Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.
