General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: 0.20 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: 0.83 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: The bar brooch and floral element test as 9k yellow gold, while the stem tests as gilt base metal, which is typical for pieces of this nature.
  • Dimensions: This brooch measures 45.78 mm long x 8.84 mm wide at its widest point on the face x 8.70 mm deep, including the stem to the pin's reverse.
  • Weight: A comfortably lightweight 1.29 grams
  • Markings: The back of the bar bears a faint "9CT" stamp, worn smooth by time and affectionate use, though still legible.
  • Era: This brooch is believed to date to anytime between the very end of the Victorian era to the first years of the Edwardian era, circa 1895-1905.
  • Buyer Notes: This brooch is sweet, simple and ladylike, with a timeless floral motif refreshed with its stylization, milgrain detail and mix of organicism and geometricism. Please kindly note that the original open c-clasp to the pin's reverse bears the effects of time and use, evidencing standard maintenance over time through some solder. Likewise, the "c" itself helps denote the piece's age, and though it is now somewhat misshapen, it functions just fine and securely holds the stem point in place. This characteristic is to be expected of any antique jewel, is noted purely for buyer transparency, and neither detracts for the brooch's aesthetic nor inhibits functionality. Beautifully wearable as is, or a perfect candidate for a conversion project into a loose, vertical pendant or a fixed, horizontal pendant necklace.

    The Story:

With a wonderfully uncomplicated design, a vivid color palette and an amaranthine motif, this antique bar brooch is a classic addition to any jewelry collection and is effortlessly refined in style. The face of the brooch boasts a curved floral element, delicate in nature and make, and appearing to loop around the rectangular bar brooch which stabilizes the overall composition.

The stem and leaf of this centerpiece recall the dynamic twists of a paisley silhouette, while the garnet-set blossom head completes the design as a bright, geometric punctuation mark. This sizable garnet is of the rhodolite variety, as exhibited in its notably pinkish-purple chroma, which resembles the alluring hue of rubies. The pink gemstone is bezel-set within the daintiest milgrain perimeter, which offsets the beauty of the stone with elegant ease. The foliate end of the flower allusion is set with an additional spread of seed pearls, carefully mounted with tiny shared bead prongs, each one charming in personality and a delightful complement to the garnet above.

While the kind of the flower herein is not immediately perceptible, both 19th century botany history and the extensive and complex history of jewelry design does guide us toward its possible identification as either an evening primrose, common poppy or pink christmas rose. The Victorians, especially, are much beloved by collectors and researchers alike because of their intense fascination with and use of symbolisms and hidden messages within the wearable and decorative arts. In the Mid-Victorian publication, 'The Language of Flowers', explains that the evening primrose conveys a sentiment of fickle affections of youth, while the common poppy is noted as meaning "fantastic extravagance" and comfort during times of loss. The book also describes the pink christmas rose as a "tranquiliz[er to]... anxiety", and a relief in the midst of disorder.

In suit, both rhodolite garnets and seed pearls herald their own symbolisms: the former are seen as a soul-strengthening gem that stabilizes and soothes, while the latter is perceived as an emblem of purity of heart that embodies undeserved grace. Like all antique jewelry, this simple brooch is comprised of loads of history, lore and meaning, and offers so much more than meets the eye. Through a thoughtful marriage of striking geometries and sensuous curves, this brooch looks ahead to the imminent Art Deco period and winks to the influence of the Art Nouveau past. This piece may be styled on the lapel or at the neckline in any orientation, or may be converted into a pendant or stationary necklace post-purchase, if so desired.

By placing an order, you accept and agree to uphold Revival Fine Jewelry's terms, conditions and policies.

Regarding All Purchases: All additional 'prop' jewelry boxes, ring boxes, or any other jewelry items pictured alongside the featured listing are for photographic and display purposes only and are not included in the transaction unless explicitly noted in the listing description and/or title. Your order will be carefully packed within a branded Revival Fine Jewelry gift box and will ship in a discreet outer shipping parcel.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
