General Information:

  • US Size: 5.50, is likely able to fit up to a size 5.75-6.00 due to the bulbous mount which allows open space inside, of which a larger finger size may fill
  • Total Carat Weight: 0.60 ct
  • Precious Metal Weight: 2.31 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 18k White Gold
  • Dimensions: faces up 10.80 mm north to south (width); ~6.30 mm rise from the finger (depth) at the face to the diamond table; shoulders taper from approx. 9.53 mm at outer points of the triangular sapphires to 1.69 mm at the base of the shank
  • Weight: A very nice heft of 3.59 grams
  • Markings: Unmarked, tests for 18k white gold
  • Era: Central Peruzzi Cut diamond is believed to date to c.1680-1700, while the 18k white gold mounting and its accompanying four triangular sapphires are early Art Deco and date to c.1920
  • Buyer Notes: An extraordinarily unusual find, this piece showcases the very best that the early 18th century and early 20th century had to offer. The aesthetics of both romantic movements is on full display, perfectly harmonizing with one another. Market comparables for the diamond alone and unmounted range from $2897 to $3927 and higher, due to its unparalleled scarcity, in tandem with its exceptional clarity and quality, with no visible chipping even after nearly three and a half centuries.

The Story:

An incredibly rare piece, this engagement ring unfolds a unique story. The central diamond is, according to its mapped proportions, classified as a Peruzzi cut diamond, which is a very close relative of the more commonly found Old Mine Cut. Peruzzis vary, however, in that they are something of a mix between their predecessor, the Mazarin Cut (mid-1600s), and their successor, the Old Mine Cut (early 1700s); Peruzzis bear the squarer geometric silhouette of the Mazarin as well as the facet count and formulation of the Old Mine.

In the case of this diamond, it is likely a later Peruzzi (c.1680-1700), perhaps cut just before or just after the development of the Old Mine, as it shows characteristics of both and errs ever so slightly more on the side of the Old Mine variation. It features a vastly generous culet at its center, drawing the eye inward into mesmerizing depths of the linear pavilion facets. In suit, those pavilion facets appear like rays shooting from the culet, refracting the colors of the world around it across every broad facet. Being that this stone is estimated to be 340+ years old, it predates the Art Deco mounting in which it is housed by about 240 years.

This dazzling diamond rises proud of the mounting in which it is housed, emphasizing its impressive angularity and brightness. It is double bead-prong set on an axis, creating a ‘diamond’ shape effect, which is cleverly underscored by the addition of four triangular created sapphires set parallel to the four flat sides of the setting. These sapphires embody the outstanding feats of engineering of the early Deco period, as the innovation of created sapphires was established around 1909. Such stones are chemically identical to their natural counterparts, simply grown under the watchful eye of a scientist. As such, these so-called ‘lab’ sapphires were very expensive, considered a luxury good, and highly desirable within jewelry. The sapphire gemstones in this ring show the subtlest variance of blue hues, from indigo with violet undertones, to deep navy and cobalt. They catch the light as beautifully as the featured diamond.

The 18k white gold mounting is in excellent shape for its over century of life, and has been cared for very well by its previous owners. It exhibits a high polish, and its hand-finished engravings are quite crisp considering its age. The pierced design is a record of its era, the organicism-inspired motif divulging rich symbolism in the same manner for which antecedent Victorian jewels are known:

A pair of stylized butterflies surmount the shoulders, representing two beings uniting in transformation together. Below these butterflies, stalks of wheat taper and symbolize abundance and prosperity. From the north and south, a foliate trio is engraved which depicts a forget-me-not flower bookended by an acanthus leaf on either side. Forget-me-nots have long been beloved representations of fidelity and devotion, while acanthus leaves convey the promise of eternal affection. An engraved zigzag pattern trims the north and south edges of the shank, hearkening to the Myandros, or Greek Key motif. This design illustrates the ebbs and flows of life, its certain unpredictability and the promise of God-sent love as a support through it all.

This ring is as historied as it is undeniably stunning, a marriage of aesthetic periods and times. It is likely that the center diamond was a 17th-18th century family heirloom, passed down from generation to generation, until it found its home within this Deco mount around 1920. Beyond the rarity of the diamond, the gold mounting is a sculptural work of art that both reveals and reminds the wearer of the power of love.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
