General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: Professionally estimated 35.15 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: Approx. 1.00 to 1.25 dwt (estimated due to setting)
  • Precious Metal Material: 9k rose gold and rose gold plated base metal chain
  • Dimensions: 89.41 mm x 26.3 mm (which is ~3.52 in x 1.04 in)
  • Weight: 8.70 grams
  • Markings: “9CT” [in rectangular cartouche] on both top bezel and bottom cone settings.
  • Era: Pieces that are similar to this design may be found in catalogues dating as far back as 1870, though the markings and the specific silhouette of this pendant appear to date it closer to c. 1900; from experience and research, we believe that this piece pre-dates 1920 and the Art Deco years. Thus, we feel most comfortable dating it to the Edwardian period (c. 1901-1910), well before WWI (c. 1914-1918).
  • Buyer Notes: This piece is an exquisite example of a relatively short-lived trend of agate pendants and fobs. These sometimes came with chains to be readily worn as necklaces, and other times were sold independent of chains so that they could be donned in whatever way best suited the buyer. This pendant features two rather large agate stones, neither of which are chipped and have been well preserved in their over 100 years. Only the four links of the center chain test as base metal-- mind you, these have been plated with a matching rose gold and to the eye and hand appear the exact same content as the other precious metal components. All other metal findings are 9k gold (from the top-down: jump ring, top loop of bezel, bezel setting itself, bottom loop of bezel, top loop of conical cap, and conical cap itself). This piece is stamped for purity in two locations.

  • Side Stone Shape: Elongated briolette (teardrop) cabochon

The Story:

Made by hand sometime around the turn of the century, this elegant pendant is beautifully oversized and with a sleek silhouette and sumptuous quality. This style pendant grew in popularity during the last couple of decades of the 19th century through the beginning of the 20th. The Edwardian period (c. 1901-1910) was a transitional time in jewelry history, in which designs recalled the ornateness of the Victorian era but also looked forward toward the chic geometries of the forthcoming Art Deco years. As such, Edwardian jewelry is a unique merging of visual softness and hardness. This pendant demonstrates these traits with grace.

The pendant is made up of two agate components: a top, sizable agate cabochon is mounted within an open-backed 9 karat rose gold bezel setting, which evidences hand fabricated creation. Below, a 9 karat rose gold capped briolette agate dangles from a gold plate four-link chain, and though plated, is perfectly matched to the pure gold settings to which it is affixed. Both the top bezel and the conical cap are stamped with “9CT” within a rectangular cartouche, indicating both the piece’s gold content as well as its country of origin; in the UK, ‘carat’ is used in place of ‘karat’ when referencing precious metal composition. In addition to the lovely gold, deep value may be found in the symbolism of its stones:

Agates are beloved for their variances in patterning and layering of color, as well as their long-beloved symbolism. Agate carnelian is believed to balance the spirit, encouraging creativity and positivity, while protecting against indifference and negativity. For thousands of years, the stone has been cherished by royalty, used as talismans for health and wealth, and seen as tokens of good fortune. Agate represents serenity and clearheaded rationality, securing emotional harmony for its wearer.

Both of the agates present in this pendant share a desirable terra cotta palette, with very warm oranges, slight golden hues, deep reds, as well as milky whites. Both stones show a lovely translucency through which light passes and causes the colors to glow. The maker of this jewel sensibly chose rose gold as a perfect compliment to the colors of the agates. This piece may be strung on any length chain, and is as striking at choker-length as it is when worn as a lariat. It is quite large compared to other agate pendants on the market, and is thus an impressive addition to any collection. Monumental in scale with sensual contours and lively color, this pendant is one of a kind.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
