The technology of lifting diamonds and gemstones above a mounting so as to allow light to pass through and refract, is one that was new as of the end of the 19th century, and was made famous and popular by Tiffany Studios’ engagement ring designs. The stones rest in a pair of matching, superbly attractive tiara-like baskets that make this brooch captivating from all angles. To the brooch’s reverse, the stem pin is a base metal affixed to the fine metal of the piece. It closes with an early model of a locking c-clasp mechanism, and has a beautiful antique gold patina.

The Story:

Designed and crafted during the very last decade of the 19th century through the early years of the 1900s, this magnificent bar brooch exudes elegance with a measured use of gemstones and and gold. Its simplicity is as striking as the spirited stones that adorn it, and make the piece a true standout in the sea of antique brooches on the market. For its delicacy, it certainly has a nice weightiness and a hefty amount of high karat gold.

The overall structure of the piece recalls the utilitarian nature of a sewing needle or safety pin, citing ‘industrial’ undertones that perfectly offset the sophisticated restraint of the design. One end of the pin is mounted with an ovular shaped cultured pearl that is crisp white, nearly silvery-white in color. The other end of the pin comes to a relative point, though slightly blunted, as this pointed end is solely ornamental.

The center of the pin is decorated with a duo of gems in the bypass style: an Old Mine cut diamond and an antique Cushion Cut ruby are set diagonally to one another, both showing evidence of their hand-cut and hand-faceted origins. These two are set within tiara-style baskets and are both encircled with six claw prongs, one of which is shared between them. Such a two-stone design is also referred to as “Toi et Moi”, wherein a pair of stones is enswirled at an angle to bolster their ‘embracing’ effect. This style was first introduced when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine de Beauharnais in 1796. Theirs was a rather scandalous engagement, remembered most for the undeniable inseparable passion the couple shared.

Just like the pairing of gems, the French phrase “Toi et Moi” translates to ‘you and me’, a proud symbol of unity and partnered hearts. In suit, diamonds are believed to represent purity, earnest affection and enduring love, while rubies symbolize vitality, ardent passion and deep emotional connection. Finally, pearls are said to convey messages of feminine energy, incalculable value and unsullied virtue. Altogether, this piece is a wearable love letter, an antique reminder of desire and belovedness. his design was worn both horizontally and vertically, allowing for much variation and diverse wearbility. Simple and dazzling, this brooch savvily dresses up any look.
