  • Precious Metal Weight: Approx. 0.16 ozt
  • Precious Metal Material: Sterling silver
  • Dimensions: 27.4 mm length x 24.0 mm width x 6.8 mm depth (depth includes the open c-clasp stem pin)
  • Weight: 4.54 grams
  • Markings: Unmarked but procured & tested as sterling silver
  • Era: Victorian c. 1870-1890
  • Buyer Notes: This brooch was made entirely by hand, and evidence of this antique character is found in its imperfections and subtle asymmetries. The turquoise stones show wear commensurate with age and affectionate use, and as mentioned, four of them appear a darker green color and are likely replacements set sometime in the piece’s history. This is a wonderful pin to jump-start a collector of the highly desirable Victorian crescent motif. For context, the photos provided have been taken outdoors in natural sunlight during the twilight hours. Please note that the pin stem closure is an open (not locking) c-clasp, though it secures fairly tightly for this kind of mechanism.

The Story:

A lovely little relic of the Victorian era, this brooch pin features the crescent moon motif that became popular during the last quarter of the 19th century. Mounted with tiny bead prongs throughout are sixteen oval cabochon turquoise gems that graduate in size toward the center, and are a bright, sea-colored blue-green with relatively few inclusions. These stones are nicely matched, save for four on either end of the crescent show a deeper green coloration, and are likely replacements set sometime during the piece’s history. The pin is cast entirely in sterling, and shows a closed back and smooth, flat reverse. Although the piece’s original stem pin remains, the open (non-locking) c-clasp has seen some wear over the last 140 or so years, as pictured.

From the 1860s on, ‘exotic’ themes from ancient Egypt, Turkey and the Middle East rose in popularity as European and American exploration, travel and excavation increased to these areas of the globe and education surrounding these cultures expanded. Likewise, Victorians are well known for their love of using the decorative arts to exhibit messages through symbolism, borrowing myriad secular designs that lavishly advertised a “heightened” and cultured world view.

In the case of this brooch, the crescent is a  waxing and waning moon form that is believed to be a nurturing and watchful eye, a motherly protective agent for its wearer, and is affiliated with feminine energy, birth cycles, and connectedness. It reminds the wearer of life’s fragility while also encouraging the life-giving relationship with the Divine, as the cyclical nature of life is, itself, a story of ceaseless and promised redemption. Further, the company of a star alongside a crescent moon is a signature of multiple countries and cultures as a symbol of deep spirituality and guidance. Additionally, turquoise is also believed to offer protection, and alludes to wisdom and a sense of calm. Together, the celestial jewel and its gems are a profoundly meaningful talisman.

Regarding All Purchases: All additional 'prop' jewelry boxes, ring boxes, or any other jewelry items pictured alongside the featured listing are for photographic and display purposes only and are not included in the transaction unless explicitly noted in the listing description and/or title. Your order will be carefully packed within a branded Revival Fine Jewelry gift box and will ship in a discreet outer shipping parcel.

Regarding Sale Purchases: Items purchased while on sale and/or sold at specially discounted rates negotiated and agreed upon by Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated consumer are considered final sale. Sale and discounted items are nonreturnable, nonrefundable and ineligible for layaway.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
