  • Buyer Notes: This piece consists of a pair of rings soldered together by a jeweler at some point in the rings’ history: the top half of the ring (the diamond ring face) is one component and the bottom half of the ring (the band/shank) is another component. Solder seams are visible where the two meet and were joined. The pair of diamonds are of outstanding color and clarity, with hand-cut faceting that is so desirable in antique cuts and which cannot be replicated by machines. The ring shows wear commensurate with age and use, wherein portions of the filigree’s detailing have been polished off from years of wear and one area of the undergallery which touches the finger has a nick (pictured). Though these characteristics are to be expected with jewelry of such age, the price has been adjusted to reflect these imperfections.

The Story:

Whimsical in nature, this fun diamond ring is a marriage between two rings, in which the diamond face of the ring tests between 20-22k white gold, while the shank of the ring tests and is hallmarked to be 18k white gold. The face features a pierced filigree design with an open-winged butterfly on both profiles, flanked by lotus blooms and cyma swirls which show polished wear from over a century of use. The shoulders of the ring are decorated with an etched acanthus leaf garland that tapers from the diamonds toward the married band. In coordinating fashion, the appended band is exquisitely crafted with a raised design of geometricized organic nods and five petaled blooms. Though originally two different rings, the jewels were merged at some point in their history, and today proudly evidence this change while reveling in Art Nouveau inspired stylization.

Every detail of this married piece has meaning and conveys a message: the butterfly symbolizes new life, endurance and positive transition, and therefore is inherently a sign of hope. When the diamond ring portion was created just after the turn of the century, Egyptian Revival design was at its height in America. Thus, themes from ancient Egypt, such as the lotus flower, abounded. The lotus plant represents creation and rebirth, as it grows in muddy silt and blooms a silky, bright flower. Its buds are believed to be a sign of the unification of two parts, which is why the motif grew to be popular in the wedding jewelry industry. Furthermore, robust cymas and acanthus forms have been used for thousands of years across multiple cultures and peoples to illustrate abundance and restoration, as acanthus plants have a unique ability to flourish even in the most trying of conditions. Its leaves embody the idea of eternalism; they withstand even the harshest conditions and thrive in graceful immortality.

Though this ring is an unusual and imperfect match paired together, it is because of its wedded rank that it so beautifully epitomizes the bond of affection. Well worn and rebuilt in love over the course of its 100 years of life, this ring is a wearable reminder of the power of connection and the value of narrative. It plumes its wear unapologetically, making it a wonderful candidate for an unusual wedding band or engagement ring, The piece’s symbolism, scale and design make it great for stacking and pairing within a history lover’s collection.

Regarding All Purchases: All additional 'prop' jewelry boxes, ring boxes, or any other jewelry items pictured alongside the featured listing are for photographic and display purposes only and are not included in the transaction unless explicitly noted in the listing description and/or title. Your order will be carefully packed within a branded Revival Fine Jewelry gift box and will ship in a discreet outer shipping parcel.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
