Hailing from the height of the Art Nouveau movement, this ring basks in whimsy and romance and centers an ultra luscious, pale pink Baroque pearl. This pearl is charmingly uneven in shape and surface texture, both desirable traits of this classification of pearl. It is framed by a symmetrical gold foliate design, which seems to visually allude to the silhouette of a lotus bloom and feels reminiscent of opening leafy forms. In sum, the design is something of a play on the shape of a fleur-de-lis, and hearkens to the navette ring shape which has been popular for centuries.
This ring’s face was repurposed from an antique stick pin prior to procurement by the shop, now living as a lovingly converted jewel. Stick pins are often converted to other forms of jewelry to reinvent them as relevant and wearable again. Being that the original pin was created during the end of the 19th or start of the 20th century, the lotus reference becomes even more historically meaningful:
As world travel opened up to the growing middle class around the 1870s to the 1890s, designs from Egypt and the Middle East were seen and appreciated by a broader global audience. Eventually, such designs were popularized, reproduced and incorporated in the decorative and building arts across Europe and America-- including elements such as the lotus plant. In ancient Egypt, the lotus represented creation and rebirth, as it grows in muddy silt and blooms a silky, bright flower. Along with papyrus reeds, lotus buds symbolized the unification of two parts, and have thus become celebrated within jewelry as talismans and wearable blessings.
When the pin was converted to a ring, a pairing of moissanites were fitted into two delicate prong mountings that flank the tip of one side of the pearl. It is likely that the mountings originally held either gemstones, diamonds or pearls-- whatever was once there was lost to time long before the pin was converted. Today, the moissanites fill their void and look exactly like twinkling diamonds accentuating the luminosity of the central pearl.
Moissanites have been an excellent sustainable option to diamonds since 1893 when the mineral was discovered in a meteorite-caused crater in Arizona. Moissanites are naturally-occurring and found in small quantities in the Earth, though newer moissanites are grown in labs to preserve what deposits still remain in nature. The earlier the ring, the likelier it is that the moissanite is natural and of antique age. In the case of this ring, the mounted moissanites are created, as they are later additions to this conversion piece.
Natural moissanites are mistaken for diamonds because their hardness and appearance is nearly identical. Even some contemporary diamond testing technology can have trouble distinguishing the difference between the two. Interestingly, moissanites rate higher than diamonds in both hardness and brilliance, meaning that they are far more durable and much sparklier than diamonds! Because of these characteristics, moissanites are incredibly desirable by the eco-conscious, and have long been economical and sustainable alternatives for diamonds.
This ring is incredibly romantic, beautifully feminine and is a wearable remnant of a bygone Nouveau era. It was carefully remastered into a functional jewel once more, and is ready to be cherished again.

Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.
