  • Precious Metal Weight: 0.84 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: Head tests for platinum and stem tests for 14k warm white gold
  • Dimensions: Overall, the pin is 53.64 mm long. The platinum head measures 10.93 mm north to south x 9.20 mm east to west x 3.10 mm deep.
  • Weight: 1.30 grams
  • Markings: This piece is not marked, which is not unusual for pieces of such age. Even so, it has been tested and verified for the noted precious metal purities.
  • Era: This piece is believed to date to the late 19th century, placing it at circa 1870-1900 according to stylistic and construction research. However, beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enable us to determine, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range or history than this without knowledge of the piece’s exact provenance.
  • Buyer Notes: While antique and vintage BPOE accessories for both ladies and gentlemen may be widely found on the market, very few are as finely made as this pin. Apart from its rich history associated to the organization, this stick pin is a very fine 19th century jewel showcasing both excellent craftsmanship on a very small scale, and superb quality materiality. It displays hand faceted gemstones and hand-finished detailing that together present a wonderfully intricate figurative piece. It is quite wearable as is, and is a great option for a custom conversion, should the next caretaker desire such a project post-purchase. The reverse shows some solder, and the piece has some wear perfectly commensurate with its impressive age and use over the last century and a half. This pin does not come with a pin clutch/back.

The Story:

Handcrafted during the last quarter of the 19th century, this delicate stick pin boasts a sparkly series of hand cut and faceted gemstones set within a figural form that has roots in the mysteriousness of the Masonic observance. The head of this pin is an articulated elk, appearing to be slightly over three-quarters turned in profile, with an individual ruby eye and a pair of asymmetrical antlers which frame a milgrained bezel-set diamond ‘halo’.

The elk is fabricated in platinum and exhibits carefully crafted hand-incised linework that alludes to the elk’s coat, as well as a zigzagging fringe depicting the creature’s neck mane. The piece’s original artist included other distinct details, such as the textural graining of the antlers and pointed ear, a sculpted snout and single nostril, and the elk’s parted mouth and peeping tongue tip, all of which converge to bring the miniature animal to life. His head is encrusted with five old, chunky cut diamonds, each one with open culets, which beautifully correspond to the floating bezeled diamond bove. This studded platinum head is mounted atop a warm white gold stem pin.

Being secretive in origin, this pin holds a trove of symbolism despite its delicate scale. It is, specifically, an emblem of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), which emerged around 1868 as a social club for actors, minstrel performers, and entertainers in New York City. A somewhat peculiar origin, the club was begun so as to avoid paying extra taxes to drink on Sundays. The BPOE was started by Masons, but is not itself a Masonic organization. Even so, the Elks participate in charitable exercises and shrouded traditions much like the Masons. Their values are centered on brotherly love, fidelity, justice and benevolence. The elk represents the BPOE’s beliefs in that it is a powerful, majestic creature, one that is largely very peaceful but fiercely protective in the face of a threat.

Separate from the history of the BPOE, elks are spiritually symbolic animals. They are seen as extremely dignified and graceful, passionate in their care and passionately loyal in character. Native American belief teaches that elks are embodiments of agility, dedication and stamina, and are teachers of life. Their antlers and teeth are deeply revered as evidence of divine longevity and time-forged fortitude. In deliberate correspondence, diamonds offer similar meaning, as their formation over billions of years is itself proof of Mother Nature’s gift of determination. To complete the symbolism, rubies are talismans of good health and abundance, as well as success in both life and purpose.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
