General Information:

  • US Size: 6.75 and sizable
  • Total Carat Weight: 2.75 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: 2.66 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: The ring is stamped and tests for 18k gold; both the crown setting and the shank are ever so slightly rosier in hue than the shoulders, which appear to have a top-wash of buttery yellow gold, which beautifully emphasizes the cast design.
  • Dimensions: This ring faces up 12.34 mm north to south, rises about 5.06 mm from the finger, and tapers to about 2.05 mm at the base of the shank.
  • Weight: A very nicely weighted 4.14 grams
  • Markings: The interior of the shank is marked "18" inside a rectangular cartouche. Likewise, a hand-engraved inscription reads, "Allie to Coro.", which is shorthand for "Allison to Caroline." The name Allison is Scottish in origin, is historically gender-neutral, and commonly given to males. With this in mind, and in combination with this ring's age, this commemoration is believed to be from a husband to his wife. Using technical research methodologies and referencing historic bann, marriage and census records, it is concluded that this ring can be traced back to one of only fifteen UK-based couples with these names between the years 1898 and 1901. Without knowing this ring's exact provenance, a more precise origin cannot be ascertained.
  • Era: This ring is believed to date to between about 1890 and 1900, give or take 1-3 years at most.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring's featured ruby is a later addition to the piece, likely added in the mid to late 20th century as a replacement for an earlier stone. The ruby herein is fairly heavily included, which gives it is identifiable opacity, and therefore, submits the stone as lesser grade quality. Most in the jewelry industry tend to refer to such opaque rubies and sapphires as simply "corundums", which is the umbrella crystalline form that is comprised of the two gems. Under microscopy, the stone appears to be color enhanced as well. Because the ruby is neither original nor gem-quality, and because it is color-treated, this ring is offered at a mere fraction of the value of all-original, higher quality gemstone rings-- and indeed, packs an immense punch, nonetheless! Lucky you!

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Natural ruby (corundum)
  • Center Stone Count: One (1)
  • Center Stone Carat Weight: 2.75-2.96 ct, by formula per the specific gravity of corundum
  • Center Stone Dimensions: 11.00 x 8.50 mm, as measured within setting as mounting permits
  • Center Stone Shape: Oval faceted cut
  • Center Stone Color: Purplish-red
  • Center Stone Clarity: Opaque

The Story:

This ring is utterly spectacular in color and coverage, empowered by its scale and its history. While not original to the ring mounting, the central stone is vibrant and unique, its inclusions no match for the twinkling flash produced when light hits every broad facet. Its effect is surprisingly striking, and makes an elegant statement regardless of technical clarity grade. The color of the stone is notable, as it sometimes appears quite pink and bright, while in other lights, it appears a much deeper, earthy red. The dance between color-effects animates the jewel all the more.

The shoulders of the ring boast cast acanthus leaf and cyma swirl ornamentation, and although this lovely patterning is up to a century and a quarter old, it is wonderfully crisp and detailed. Cymas and billowing acanthus leaves have long been used in design, architecture and jewelry to ascribe profound meaning: acanthus leaves embody the idea of eternalism, thriving in graceful immortality in even the harshest conditions and withstanding beating winds, rains and sun. The plant is a deeply symbolic form that has been used for thousands of years across cultures and peoples as a representation of abundant life and rebirth, given the plant's unique-- and tenacious-- ability to thrive even in the most trying of conditions. The cymas, which herein look like swirling volutes at beneath the entablature that forms the shoulders of the ring, echo these same symbolisms, their shape harkening to the ouroboros, to the infinity emblem, and suggesting the same. When understood in tandem with the interior inscription, we can conclude that the husband, Allison, is forever committing his eternal love, his unyielding, steadfast affection, to his wife, Caroline.

The crown-style basket setting is iconically Victorian, though eagle-eyed shoppers may notice that the scalloped undulations that typically terminate into claw prongs atop the stone are squared off at the girdle of this ruby. This detail may evidence the [re]construction of the ring: the original gemstone was probably snipped out of its setting by cutting off the tips of the prongs to release the stone from the mount. When the existing ruby was set as a replacement, the bench jeweler opted to keep the modified prongs rather than re-tipping them to their points. Further investigation reveals that the ruby is actually epoxied in place, which is not a preferred method but is acceptable given the quality stone. With epoxy as the primary setting mechanism, prongs become obsolete. In short, the retipping into claw prongs was rendered unnecessary by the setting technique used to place the ruby. While none of these specifications are actually noticeable to the eye, they are interesting to learn and are noted for transparency.

This ring is a special treasure, with secrets known and unknown, and beauty that defies the ages.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
