General Information:

  • US Size: 5⅛, which is right between a 5.00 and 5.25
  • Total Carat Weight: 2.14 ct
  • Precious Metal Weight: 0.78 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: Tests between 10k and 12k rosy, warm yellow gold
  • Dimensions: This ring faces up 6.65 mm north to south (width). The band tapers from about 3.75 mm at the subtly knife-edged shoulders (just past the center setting) to about 1.30 mm at its thinnest width at the base of the shank. The ring rises roughly 6.75 mm from the finger at the top of the moonstone.
  • Weight: A featherweight 1.21 grams
  • Markings: This ring is unmarked, save for an almond-shaped stamp on the band's interior on one shoulder. This stamp is ambiguous at best, which no distinct imagery, so it is not able to be identified.
  • Era: The claw prong setting, which is clearly modeled after the famed and patented Tiffany-style mounts of the late 19th-early 20th centuries, indicates that this ring dates to the same period, circa 1880-1900.
  • Buyer Notes: The moonstone shows a very slight chatoyancy, also known as the cat eye effect, producing a refracted "line" of lighter color/light when viewed in profile from the side. From the top, this effect is not readily visible, and the stone instead appears to glow with a whitish to silvery aura. This moonstone does not project the blue adularescence of gem-quality moonstone. The eight claw prong setting is iconically Victorian, and given that moonstone is a more delicate stone, the prongs are appropriately softer in their grip. As always, we always advise buyers to have all prongs checked by their preferred jeweler post-purchase and before wear. Under the extreme magnification of a jeweler's loupe, two internal inclusions are visible. These are pictured for buyer transparency, though are not visible to the naked eye and, therefore, do not affect the historic aesthetic of the ring.

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Moonstone
  • Center Stone Count: One (1)
  • Center Stone Carat Weight: 2.14 ct by formula using the stone's dimensions and per the specific gravity of moonstone
  • Center Stone Dimensions: 5.47 mm, as approximated and measured within mounting so as to preserve the piece's historic integrity
  • Center Stone Shape: Sheroid/Orb
  • Center Stone Color: Silvery-white; this stone does not have the vivid sky blue adularescence and is instead an icy, glowing whitish hue
  • Center Stone Clarity: Translucent with chatoyancy from profile view

The Story:

Wearable grace and confident in historic charm, this Victorian era statement ring boasts a glowing moonstone orb in a perfectly feminine eight-prong claw style mount. The ring's shoulders are ever so slightly pinched to create the softly architectural knife-edge effect, and further taper to a super slender width at the base.

The style of the mounting comes directly from the drawing boards of the famed jewelry powerhouse, Tiffany & Co. Tiffany was the first to patent this kind of setting, wherein a diamond centerstone was raised above the mounting and finger so as to allow maximum light to pass into and through the gemstone. Utmost light allowed utmost refraction, emphasizing the gemstone's colorful effects with dramatically more impact than previous settings in which stones were very nearly flush with the band on the finger.

Taking this intelligent cue from Tiffany, the maker of this ring-- who remains unidentified-- has created the rosy gold setting to admit maximum light into the featured moonstone orb and increase its sublime glow. In lower lights, the stone is especially otherworldly, and when viewed in profile, a cat's eye effect may be enjoyed. While the moonstone herein does not exude the vivid blue adularescence for which top of the line, gem-quality moonstones are known, it is no less special.

Most interestingly, this ring was designed and fashioned as an affordable fine jewelry hierloom marketed toward the growing middle class of the late Victorian era, which for the first time in history, had the expendable income to invest in finer jewelry much like the upper class. Extensive research unearthing jeweler's catalogues of the 19th and 20th centuries reveal many variations of rings just like this one. Even after 140+ years of life, this ring remains beautifully wearable and ultra timeless.

Sale Terms: Sale prices are only valid within the prescribed sale window, unless otherwise stated by Revival Fine Jewelry or agreed upon between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer. To maintain business sustainability and general fairness, individual customers are not entitled to exclusive notification of, or owed access to, store sales antecedently. Orders processed prior to a promotion or sale, items placed on layaway prior to a sale, and payments paid through layaway prior to a sale will not be retroactively adjusted to reflect sale pricing or terms.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
