General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: 33.24 ctw
  • Chain length end to end:  15.00 inches (38.10 cm/381 mm) with spring ring closure
  • Precious Metal Weight: About 4 dwt, estimated due to the weight of the coral
  • Precious Metal Material:  The cable chain and closure test as 14k yellow gold, while the flush gold panel backing the coral and the Etruscan Revival wirework tassel topper both test up to 18k yellow gold. All gold present boasts a lovely patina that enriches the tonality of the gold.
  • Dimensions: This necklace is 15 inches in length, and the multi-gemstone focal point drops about 65 mm (2.56 inches).
  • Weight: A desirably weighty 7.45 grams
  • Markings: This piece is unmarked, but under 60x magnification, the coral's gold backing *may* have the remnants of an old stamp of some kind, be that a maker's mark or a commemorative message or inscription. It is far too polished away after over a century of wear to read, but its ghost-marks are no less intriguing!
  • Era: This necklace is believed to be a marriage of several antique components that were lovingly and thoughtfully married at some point in this piece's history: The coral and diamond component is believed to date to the 1870s-1880s, the Etruscan Revival style gold wirework tassel topper dates to the early 1870s, and the seed pearl orb and tassel, as well as the cable chain, date to circa 1900-1910. Our best estimation is that these components were all inherited by one owner, who had them reimagined during the Edwardian, pre-WWI period, into the piece that exists today. Without knowing this necklace's exact provenance, we cannot ascertain a more precise history than this. Our estimations are deduced from years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise, but sometimes it is the mystery of a jewel that captivates us the most!
  • Buyer Notes: This necklace is an extraordinarily lovely piece, featuring myriad gems all set within patinaed old gold. It feels sultry and ladylike all at once, and its elegant components offer a shared window into jewelry history itself. This piece exudes both history and beauty. Please read "The Story" below for specific details.

The Story:

A whimsical and feminine relic, this stunning necklace is striking in its make as well as its aesthetic. It is believed to be a marriage of jewelry components, carefully and admirably composed into the necklace we have today. It sits right at or above the clavicle, a flirtatious and practical length, strategically decided so that the weight of the coral does not cause it to tip forward when worn. Rather, it sits flush against the chest, a most elegant compliment to the texture and tone of skin.

With flashes of light, a vividly bright white diamond glitters at eh carved coral rosebud's center, its scale quite sizable against the delicious color of the coral. This diamond is a full cut Old European, complete with a large culet at its base that causes the highly desirable kozibe effect, in which the culet reflects innumerably on and within the facets of the diamond-- a trait belonging only to historic faceting styles such as this! Nibbles do exist on the diamond's girdle, the outermost edges of the rosebud's petals show some wear, and one strand of pearls on the tassel is about half as long as the others. As well, the ends of the strung seed pearl tassels show very subtle dabs of historic adhesive that was likely applied to keep the strands from unraveling. Such characteristics are to be expected-- and indeed, beloved-- of antique gems, and are not distracting, but mentioned for transparency. Ample in beauty, the necklace's charm does not stop there.

A v-shaped cable chain extension leads to a pearl orb and tassel that dangles with sensuous rhythm from the diamond-studded rosebud above. The tassel's golden cannetille cap embodies the trends of the Etruscan and Archaeological Revivalism of the 1860s-1870s, but it is believed that this golden topper was a later addition to enhance the lustrousness of the pearl fixtures. Jewelry and fashion history tell us that this kind of strung pearl detailing is characteristic of early Edwardian pieces, as is the necklace's 15" length. Likewise assisting in dating this piece are the clues found in the chain: a view under a loupe reveals that most, if not all, of the cable chain's links are hand-soldered together, a historic feature that solidified and fortified the links to maximize wearability, but one that faded away once machine-assembled chains surged in popularity in the first few decades of the 20th century.

Equal parts classy and sassy, this antique necklace is a multifaceted masterpiece that weaves together time, tastes and talent. Every element is an ode to Mother Nature that formed it and to the skillful hands that crafted it. This necklace is a true heirloom, ready for another lifetime of loving wear.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
