General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: 11.40 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: 5.25 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 18k yellow gold etched bezel frames and 10k yellow gold kidney ear wires (later additions)
  • Dimensions: The discs measure between 21.80 mm to 21.90 mm in diameter including the gold bezel frames. These earrings are about ~30 mm overall length from the top of the hooks to the bottom of the bezel frames.
  • Weight: A very impressive 8.17 grams
  • Markings: The reverse of the etched bezel frames are both stamped with "18" indicating their 18k gold composition (also been tested for verification).
  • Era: The carved sardonyx monogram circular tablets are believed to date to the 1870s-1880s, while their conversion from cufflinks into earrings (specifically, the addition of the 10k kidney ear wires) likely dates to sometime between the 1960s and the 2000s. Without knowing their exact provenance, we cannot determine a more definitive conversion date range than this.
  • Buyer Notes: This pair of earrings are remarkably well made, and are a bespoke pair with literally no exact comparables on the market at the time of listing. These began life as a pair of cufflinks (indicated by their scale, size, construction and by the fact that the monograms are correctly legible (since the letters are not mirrored versions of themselves, we know that this pair was never intended to be used as wax seals, as many carved stones were at this time-- confirming their original use as decorative accessories rather than utilitarian accessories). Note that some solder and patina exists to their rears, which we have chosen to leave as-is so as to preserve their historic integrity.

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Chalcedony-sardonyx (a kind of banded agate akin to black onyx, but with more iron deposits which cause its reddish coloration)
  • Center Stone Count: Two (2)
  • Center Stone Carat Weight: 5.70 ct by formula per the specific gravity of sardonyx
  • Center Stone Dimensions: About 18.00 x 18.00 x 2.50 mm, as measured within setting and as mounting permits
  • Center Stone Shape: Hand carved circular disc tablet
  • Center Stone Color: Sardonyx is naturally banded, ranging from rusty red at the base, to semi-translucent milky whitish in the middle and orangey-apricot at the top. This ring shows the red and white layers. Please reference the photos to assess the stones' chromatic characteristics.
  • Center Stone Clarity: Semi-translucent

The Story:

Cleverly converted from a pair of antique gentleman's cufflinks, these earrings now present as a chic and unique drop earrings. These sardonyx monogram tablets are housed in matching 18k etched and polished yellow gold bezel mountings, which are their original 19th century settings, secured in placed by bowtie-shaped backings affixed to their reverse. In their nascence, these two cufflinks were likely part of a set complete with coordinating shirt studs, altogether boxed in a specially made fitted box. Though the rest of the suite is no longer with this pair, these links have been lovingly transformed so that they may continue to be worn and enjoyed.

Sardonyx has been a preferred favorite material for cameos, seals and monograms for virtually thousands of years, as it is strong and durable, easily carved without compromising the stone's integrity, and particularly notable for its banded (and thus, dually chromatic) effect. A highly skilled, highly trained artisan crafted these sardonyx stones, as indicated by the outstanding evenness in carving the top whitish layer of each tablet; both discs are quite beautifully matched, uniformly carved between the two, the lettering carefully incised with amazing exactitude. The etched bezel frames are equally lovely, both frames punctuated with matching pyramidal shapes and linear hatchwork to emphasize their round shape.

These three letters may be combined to form six different sets of initials: LBC, LCB, BLC, BCL, CLB and CBL. Are you the lucky owner of any of these sets of initials? While we may never know for whom this monogrammed pair was originally made, their immense beauty and superb craftsmanship are undeniably attractive and make for a striking statement, even after well over a century and a half of life.

Orders processed prior to a promotion or sale, items placed on layaway prior to a sale, and payments paid through layaway prior to a sale will not be retroactively adjusted to reflect sale pricing or terms.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.

More information on these, and more, topics may be found in the shop policies.
