General Information:

  • US Size: 5.50
  • Total Carat Weight: Estimated 2.00 ctw altogether
  • Precious Metal Weight: 1.75 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 14k yellow gold
  • Dimensions: 7.86 mm north to south on the ring face; ~4.43 mm rise from the finger (depth) on the ring face; shoulders taper from ~2.67 mm to 1.58 mm at the base of the shank.
  • Weight: 2.78 grams
  • Markings: 585 within a cut corner horizontal diamond cartouche (indicating at least 58.5% gold content, which equals 14 karat gold).
  • Era: Given the prong style, shoulder details and the construction techniques of the mounting, we estimate that the gold mount dates to sometime between the 1940s and the 1960s. However, the unique and imperfect cuts of the garnets indicate earlier origins, perhaps sometime between 1870-1900 or so. Thus, the ring is believed to be a vintage mount with antique stones, skillfully crafted under the inspiration of jewelry fashions of the late Deco/Egyptian Revival years and the Victorian Revival aesthetics. Even so, without knowing an exact provenance, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enables us to determine.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring is classic, and is a particularly intriguing bauble for those who collect garnet jewelry or Bohemian jewels, as it shows very unique characteristics that reveal its deeper meanings beyond just its beauty. It is excellent for solo wear, though stacks very nicely given its linear shape and height.

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Garnet
  • Center Stone Count: Ten (10)
  • Center Stone Dimensions: About 3.70 x 3.55 x 2.20 mm

  • Center Stone Shape: Modified Old Round Faceted cut (not OEC and not RBC)
  • Center Stone Color: Orangey-Red to Maroon depending on the lighting conditions
  • Center Stone Clarity: Translucent, causing light to pass through and seemingly “glow”

The Story:

Fabricated in buttery 14k yellow gold as a stylish twist on the Art Deco period’s Egyptian Revival fad, this statement ring boasts ten unique garnets. The garnets are a deep, warm red, that in some lights appear almost dark-orangey and in other lights, somewhat maroon. No matter the coloration they present, they seem to “glow” in moody tonality, and captivate the light and twinkle on the finger. These stones all show individual make, as their characteristics ever so slightly vary from one to the next. Most interestingly, some of these stones exhibit the standard octagonal table shape, while others exhibit a hexagonal table shape, the latter therefore denoting a modified faceting matrix as well. This is quite unusual, and though subtle, is a delicate detail that sets this ring apart from most other garnet rings.

Continuing this charm, we can see that these gems are all a bit imperfectly faceted, which indicates that they were originally cut by hand rather than a machine. All diamonds and gemstones were originally hand-faceted, but what is notable in this case is that the garnets appear to pre-date the gold ring mounting; the garnets could date back to the last quarter of the 1800s through circa 1900, while the ring mount appears to be a product of the Revival style phenomenon of the 1940s-1960s. That being said, the ring matches catalog styles dating to the 40s, during which time the Deco aesthetic held steady as it gave way to what we call the “retro” period just before Mid Century Modern took over. As well, it matches styles produced during the 60s, when Victorian Revival emerged en vogue at the same time that Art Deco Revival also swelled in popularity. In any case, the featured garnets are possibly heirlooms, passed from one generation to the next before being formally mounted in this piece as it exists today.

In true Deco style, nods to the ancient Egyptian genre can be seen in the elegant details of this ring: the shoulders take on the silhouette of elongated leaves, complete with stylized striations engraved lengthwise. Across the ring face, shared prongs span the central portion and have been carefully crafted to constitute four petaled flowers. Given the historical tradition of symbolism within jewelry, it can be presumed that these small flowers are intended to resemble the Dogwood bloom. The fact that Dogwoods bloom around the Easter season has largely informed their symbolism: Dogwood blossoms are spiritually perceived as emblems of the blood-stained four-armed cross, which itself symbolizes the purity and possibility of new beginnings and transformation. In tandem, the selection of the garnets makes perfect sense, as their rich tones reflect Christ’s blood itself, and reminds the wearer of the universal power of compassion, no matter their personal beliefs.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
