The Story:

Quintessentially classic in every way, this engagement ring hails from the end of the 1930s. Though its design is simple, every element is perfectly representative of the period in which it was made, embodying tenets of both the Art Deco and Art Moderne movements. Both movements celebrated angularity and the basic geometries, two pillars that can be clearly appreciated in this ring. As was true of fashion, architecture, furnishings and décor of these movements, this ring's ornamentation is intentional and delicately thoughtful.

The central diamond is mounted within four corner prongs shaped like rounded letter "v's" that are reminiscent of stylized hearts. This mounting style surged in popularity by the late 30s and into the 40s, with variations continuing to be in demand well into the Mid Century designs of the 1950s. The effect is something of an illusion, adding complementary grandeur and visual heft to the central diamond without overpowering its show-stopping beauty. When viewed in profile, one can see that these corner prongs carefully incline inwards to, together, create the petal-like basket that houses the diamond's depth.

Flanking the 0.44 ct Transitional diamond are a pair of dainty accent diamonds that are simpler in cut but equally clear and sparkly. They are bead-prong set within almond mountings which are oriented portrait-style and designed to give the sleek impression of bezel settings. Well worth a closer look, these settings actually harken to the simplicity of a tulip's silhouette when turned ninety degrees: three tiny triangular forms dot the small settings and point toward the center stone, the middle of these forms acting as buttresses of the center mounting. These details offer a quiet nod to the springtime bloom, which often symbolizes humility and grace. According to one 19th century edition of the Language of Flowers, tulips represent a declaration of hopeless love, poetically noting that tulip petals are extraordinary in that no two are exactly alike, and it is this precise nature of uniqueness that speaks to every couple's love story.

The featured diamond is of superior quality, and its color and clarity are intensely desirable to collectors and make this ring an ideal investment piece. Both Old European and Transitional cuts are becoming more and more difficult to find, as many are either being purchased by collectors and/or repurposed or recut by machine into other, contemporary jewelries. This diamond is classified as a Transitional Cut (classified by the GIA as an early Circular Brilliant Cut), and to find an old cut that is this lovely is incredibly rare, and highly sought after.

This diamond's cut represents a very, very brief window of time between the late 1920s and the early 1930s (please be aware that this time range is sometimes debated) when diamond cutters began transitioning from the chunky height of Old European Cut diamonds of the 1890s-1910s to the lower-profile/sleeker spread of Modern Round Brilliant Cut diamonds of the 1940s through today. This diamond is one that survived this sliver of time that was so extremely pivotal to jewelry history. It boasts the chunkiness that is coveted of antique hand-faceted diamonds, in which every facet is broad and wide in geometry creating a dazzling flash that modern stone cuts simply do not possess.

On calculating the carat weight: This ring was sold to the shop as being roughly 0.39 ct. However, this estimations are low and incorrect because it was calculated according to the formula for Modern Round Brilliant (MRB) cut diamonds, and using the spread of the diamond (how wide it measures head-on) to determine a corresponding carat weight. The MRB formula is perfectly appropriate for modern diamond cuts, produced from the late 1940s/1950s, on. But, the MRB formula does not take into consideration the substantial heft of the faceting system of historic Transitional/Early Circular Brilliant diamonds-- of which this diamond is one.

Therefore, we calculate this diamond using the historic formula which takes into consideration the proportions and ratios of historic cuts, including the roughly proportionately smaller table, the medium culet at the base of the diamond, the pavilion's length of 65% or smaller and the internal star length of 50% or smaller. Using the historic-- and inherently more appropriate-- formula, we estimate that this center diamond is actually between 0.42 and 0.46 carat weight, for an average weight estimate of 0.44 ct.

Please kindly keep in mind that different jewelers, different dealers and different appraisers vary in the formula they use to determine the carat weight of a diamond. In order to provide our shoppers with the truest carat weight that we can, we use the most appropriate formula according to the exact cut of the stone present.

Sale Terms: Sale prices are only valid within the prescribed sale window, unless otherwise stated by Revival Fine Jewelry or agreed upon between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer. To maintain business sustainability and general fairness, individual customers are not entitled to exclusive notification of, or owed access to, store sales antecedently. Orders processed prior to a promotion or sale, items placed on layaway prior to a sale, and payments paid through layaway prior to a sale will not be retroactively adjusted to reflect sale pricing or terms.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
