General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: 0.22 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: 2.55 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 15 karat beautifully patinaed yellow gold. Collectors deem this deep, iridescent patina especially prized, as it is time-earned and cannot be replicated. Polishing it away actually lowers the pieces desirability, and as such, it has been respectfully left exactly as-is by the shop. The future caretaker may leave or buff this jewel to their content post-purchase.
  • Dimensions: This brooch measures 48.93 mm long x 11.21 mm wide x 10.02 mm deep/thick including the reverse stem and loop
  • Weight: A very impressive 3.96 grams
  • Markings: The brooch's reverse bears a raised "15CT" indicating its purity, and has been tested to confirm as much.
  • Era: This brooch dates to between about 1870-1880.
  • Buyer Notes: A much beloved relic of the last quarter of the 19th century, this brooch is iconically Victorian in every way, from its stone cuts to its design and symbolism. The brooch is believed to hair from the United Kingdom, as indicated by the purity stamp's use of "CT" (the British variant for carat) rather than "K" or "KT" (the American variant for karat).

Specifications:

  • Side Stone Type: Sapphire

  • Side Stone Dimensions: 1.65 x 1.60 mm, 2.50 x 2.01 mm and 1.58 x 1.40 mm
  • Side Stone Shape: The outermost sapphires (top & bottom/east & west, depending on how the jewel is worn) are both Round Faceted Cuts, while the central sapphire is an Old Cushion Cut
  • Side Stone Color: All sapphires are a vivid royal blue
  • Side Stone Clarity: All sapphires are translucent
  • Side Stone Notes: One of the outermost Round Faceted Cut sapphires MAY be a lab created stone. Lab stones are chemically and molecularly identical to their earth-mined counterparts, and were considered the height of scientific achievement at the end of the 19th century through the 1930s. Indeed, lab created corundums commanded HIGHER prices than natural gemstones at the time! On the other hand, the two other sapphires, including the sizable center sapphire are natural stones.

The Story:

A mid to late Victorian treasure, this piece is somewhat hollow-formed, allowing for it to maintain a comfortable lightweightness without sacrificing size and visual impact. The piece is designed with motifs that tell an interesting story of complex symbolisms:

The primary body of the brooch is meant to allude to a stylized "faux bois" (French for false wood) tree limb or trunk, oriented horizontally and intersected by a diagonally swept ribbon encrusted with diamonds and sapphires. Dynamically billowing from the opposing ends of the cut 'wood' body are organically-inspired leafy blossoms, complete with romantic cyma swirls and fully articulated details. Interestingly, these plants appear to be a mix of two motifs: first, their tri-petaled head is reminiscent of the Great White Trillium flower, native to North America, which is said to represent holy purity, divine peace and perfect beauty; second, their indented petals (or leaves) remind us of English Ivy, which is said to represent eternal life, loyal affection, and powerful constancy.

Faux Bois is an art form dedicated to producing works that ornately and precisely recall genuine wood grain and the texture of timber. In 18th and 19th century jewelry, this style is often found within sentimental and mourning jewels; the fallen or prematurely cut tree symbolizes a life cut short, potential unfulfilled and affections unanswered. In tandem, the fantastical mix of trilliums + ivy evokes a sense of eternal devotion and impassioned attachment.

The cyma swirls that appear to wrap the faux bois bar are emblems of the Acanthus plant, which represents the idea of eternalism, given that the acanthus plant is known for its ability to thrive in graceful immortality, even under the harshest conditions and withstanding beating winds, rains and sun. The swirls allude to the ebbs and flows of life, its unknowns and the tenderness of the heart. The ribbon brings visual movement to the piece, reminding the wearer of life and progress even in times of loss and lack-- and how the promise of good coming from change overrides the difficulty of change.

In suit, the use of bright blue sapphires correspond to the Forget-Me-Not flower, a most common motif symbolizing abiding love; sapphires also represent wisdom, virtue and appointed truth. Diamonds symbolize the strength of forever and the fortitude of love. The total number of seven gemstones, too, speaks to the holy and lucky number, a symbol of steadiness, reliability and ordained stability.

Sale Terms: Sale prices are only valid within the prescribed sale window, unless otherwise stated by Revival Fine Jewelry or agreed upon between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer. To maintain business sustainability and general fairness, individual customers are not entitled to exclusive notification of, or owed access to, store sales antecedently. Orders processed prior to a promotion or sale, items placed on layaway prior to a sale, and payments paid through layaway prior to a sale will not be retroactively adjusted to reflect sale pricing or terms.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.

More information on these, and more, topics may be found in the shop policies.

Layaway is available for full priced, non-sale items priced $600.00 USD or greater, and items may not be combined to attain price-eligibility. Plans are offered as 3-month/90-day maximum terms.

In exchange for offering interest-free plans, customers agree to abide and uphold the following nonnegotiable terms and conditions:

  • The remaining 70% balance is divided up into three subsequent monthly payments due on the same day of the following three months. If delinquent, a $20.00 USD late fee is added per day to an overdue payment until paid.
  • In the event that a layaway installment is left unpaid for seven (7) days and no communication is received from the designated customer, the layaway plan will be presumed abandoned. While the item will be returned to public sale, all payments made hitherto are still considered final.
