General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: Professionally estimated 0.585 ctw (inclusive of all stones present: two diamonds, one citrine, one emerald, one sapphire and one ruby)
  • Precious Metal Weight: Professionally estimated 1.45 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material:  Solid platinum throughout
  • Dimensions:  The face of this brooch measures 15.37 mm north to south x 15.45 mm east to west (excluding the stem pin in the rear, the endpoint of which extends beyond the edge of the brooch face) x 5.51 mm deep (including the stem pin)
  • Weight: A very nice 2.25 grams
  • Markings Unmarked but tested
  • Era:  The central diamond's cut indicates that this pin is most likely to date to the late Deco/early Retro period. The primary diamond's cut represents a very, very brief window of time between the late 1930s and the early 1950s (please be aware that this time range is sometimes debated) when diamond cutters began transitioning from the chunky height of Old European Cut diamonds of the 1890s-1910s to the lower-profile/sleeker spread of Modern Round Brilliant Cut diamonds of the 1940s through today. This diamond is one of the few to survive from this tiny sliver of time that was so extremely pivotal to jewelry history. It boasts the chunkiness that is coveted of antique hand-faceted diamonds, in which every facet is broad and wide in geometry creating a dazzling flash that modern stone cuts simply do not possess.
  • Buyer Notes: This pin shows age-related wear, perfectly commensurate with its age and affectionate use. As pictured, the colored stones show some corner nibbles and chipping, which we opt to see as time-earned qualities. It is important that the buyer understand that these imperfections are not at all visible to the naked and unaided eye, but are described for full transparency and consideration. Many vintage and antique Masonic/Order of the Eastern Star jewels exist on the market today, but very few are of such exceptional quality. This pin is petite and exquisite, wonderfully bright and sparkly with colorful and eye-catching accents. Its beauty elevates this brooch as perfectly wearable and enjoyable for those who do not necessarily associate with Order of the Eastern Star (OES) or its counterpart organizations. While functional exactly as it is in its original, historic state as a pin, this piece is also an excellent candidate for any number of jewelry conversions by the buyer's preferred, trusted jeweler post-purchase, including as a ring, pendant or charm.

    The Story:

This magnificent late Art Deco Order of the Eastern Star (OES) pin is a stunning example of the ceremonious jewelry created for members of the Masonic organization. While the market abounds with multitudes of OES jewels, this piece stands out for the exceptionally high quality of its primary diamond and accent gems-- which boasts a notable color and clarity. The central diamond that decorates this celestial jewel is approximately 0.30 carats, blindingly bright and sparkling. It is housed in a pentagonal platinum setting, wherein each of the five corners assert a delicate bead prong to secure the stone in a near-invisible mounting.

Extending from this large center diamond are five colorful rays which, together, form the shape of a five-pointed star. Each arm of the star is enhanced by a platinum milgrain bezel and bursting with color, a particularly attractive complement to the rainbow refractions of the diamonds throughout. The green arm is natural emerald, the blue arm is lab-created sapphire, the reddish-pink arm is lab created ruby, the golden-orange arm is natural citrine, and the clear-white arm is natural diamond. All these pointed arms exhibit some level of abrasion and nibbling under a loupe after nearly 90 years of life. other. The lab made corundums were produced to perfection under lab conditions while still technically maintaining an identical chemical composition to its earth-mined counterparts. The design of this star allows for skin or material to peek through the star's interstitial openings, altogether presenting as a fully articulated, highly detailed little jewel.

The OES was founded in 1850 and formally recognized in 1873, and has a long, complex history, rituals and belief structure. It is open to men and women over 18 years of age, and has a foundation in biblical leanings, though it is accepting of any religious affiliation. The founder of the organization referred to its chartered chapters as a ‘Supreme Constellation’, offering a glimpse into the origins of the jewels’ celestial reference. Of note is the ascendant symbolism imbued in this, and all, Eastern Star motif pieces, which is only truly understood by its members but has been dissected by jewelry historians for ages:

The star is emblematic of the female members, and is a spiritual symbol of the transfiguration of the Divine made human at the point of Christ’s birth, upon which the Star of Bethlehem shone. The star is also a symbolic relative to the planet Venus, which is also called the Eastern Star. This five pointed stylized shape is believed to have a corresponding acronym, wherein the five points are associated with the letters F.A.T.A.L., standing for “Fairest Among Thousands, Altogether Lovely” in reference to Song of Songs.

These points also reference leading female figures of the Holy Scriptures and their corresponding attributes worthy of reverence and simulation:

    • Blue point: Adah, a descendent of Adam and the daughter of Jephthah according to the OES, whose name means ‘adornment’ and who reflects fidelity and the gift of music. She is represented by the symbols of the sword and the veil, which allude to the need for bravery in the name of good. Spring is her season, honoring youth and innocent beginnings.
    • Yellow point: Ruth, a young widow and daughter-in-law to Naomi, whose name means ‘faithful friend’ and who reflects constancy and an expression of grace. She is represented by a sheaf of barley, which alludes to the collection of selfless deeds performed for others. Summer is her season, honoring growth and abundance.
    • White/Clear point: Esther, the Jewish wife to Xerxes who became queen of the Persian empire, whose name means ‘star of joy’, and who reflects virtuous loyalty. She is represented by a scepter and crown, which allude to using authority for justice. She does not have a season association.
    • Green point: Martha, the sister of Lazarus and May, whose name means ‘master lady’ and who reflects faith, active displays of religion. She is represented by a broken column, which alludes to faith even in the midst of grief and loss. Winter is her season, honoring reliance on God in the most lifeless of times.
    • Red/Pink point: Electa, the addressee of John’s second letter in the New Testament, whose name derives from the Greek Εklektē, which means the ‘elected’ or ‘chosen lady, and who reflects love even through enduring persecution. She is represented by a chalice, which alludes to one’s allotted portions of grief and joy. Autumn is her season, honoring the lifelong pursuit of maturation.

According to the symbolic codes of the OES, one would appropriately wear this pin with the white or clear arm of the star pointing downward, so that the four seasonal heroines would radiate outward and everforth to the world around. As well, such an orientation ensures that one’s ‘foundation’ is the use of the gift of authority (spiritual and otherwise) for only good and the furtherance of the truth, for such is the divine infrastructure for all other virtues, fortitudes and beatitudes.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.
