General Information:

  • US Size: This ring sits at a 6.50 to 6.75 on the shop mandrel, though due to the ever so slight ovular shape of the of band, it fits up to a snug 7.00, and is sizable post-purchase by the next caretaker if so needed.
  • Total Carat Weight: 0.42 ctw with the visual spread of nearly 1.00 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: Approximately 2.22 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: The diamond face of the ring is fabricated in sterling silver and the shank is 14k white gold.
  • Dimensions: This ring faces up 11.77 mm north to south x 12.26 mm east to west, and rises about 7.90 mm from the finger. The band tapers from about 3.10 mm at the shoulders to 2.05 mm at the base of the shank.
  • Weight: A wonderful 3.45 grams
  • Markings: The interior of the shank is stamped "14K".
  • Era: The rose cut diamond and silver face dates to the Georgian period, circa 1800, and its construction techniques and stylistic characteristics suggest that it likely originates from Mitteleuropa (Middle Europe), of Austro-Hungarian heritage. The white gold band is a later addition to the top component so as to convert to into a ring. As such, the current conversion state of the piece is exactly how this shop acquired it, and therefore, is exactly how we are offering it for sale. Without knowing the exact provenance of the elements, a more precise date range cannot be ascertained.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring is offered as an exciting addition to any avid collector's jewelry box, special for its unique shape and make, which only add to the splendor displayed in its historic age. Prospective buyers, please keep in mind that foiled stones should be handled and enjoyed with care. Read more about this below.

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Diamond
  • Center Stone Count: Three (3)
  • Center Stone Carat Weight: 0.42 ctw; 0.15 ct, 0.14 ct and 0.13 ct by formula using the estimated dimensions below and per the specific gravity of diamond. The exact carat weight cannot be determined without removing the diamond from its historic setting. As such, this is a professional approximation for the sake of preserving the ring's historic integrity.
  • Center Stone Dimensions: Estimated 3.91-4.45 mm
  • Center Stone Shape: Rose Cut
  • Center Stone Color Grade: Estimated J-K; the color and clarity cannot be known for certain due to the foiled settings.
  • Center Stone Clarity Grade: VS1-SI1; one diamond bears a visible velvety carbon inclusion near the point of the setting (point of the heart or tip of the triangle, depending on ring orientation).
  • Center Stone Notes: The foiled treatment renders the color and clarity as estimations. Though calculated at 0.42 carats, the visual appearance of the diamonds is the equivalent of 0.97 carats.

    The Story:

Equal parts romantic and enthralling, this enchanting diamond ring is one for the spotlight. A trio of fiery, foiled diamonds comprise the face, and are mounted in a softly geometric arrangement reminiscent of a heart or triangle, depending on the ring's orientation. As is true of all antique jewelry, symbolism is infused in every design choice made. The rounded triangular shape of the ring face can be read as a heart when worn single vertex point downward, or as a triangle when worn the opposite. Historically, heart shapes have represented exactly that-- the passion and affection of the heart. The shape of this heart is exactly what we would expect for heart motifs of the 17th, 18th and very early 19th centuries; this heart form is curvaceous and soft, without the sharp angles of the modern heart symbol. When flipped, it appears as a triangle, the most sacred and stable of shapes, the three points decidedly representative of the Holy Trinity, and the peak point directed upward toward the heavens to remind the wearer of God's loving presence, compassionate guidance and tender authority.

The diamond face of the ring predates the shank, and appears to have begun life as a drop component of either a pedant, stomacher or pendeloque earring. Very subtle evidence of this can be seen at the single vertex opposite the 2-point base, where a circular pinpoint of rose gold sits flush within the sterling setting. Originally, this rose gold element would have been part of a wire or extension of the jewel that would have affixed the existing diamond component to its 'other half'-- whatever that 'half' may have been. At some point in the piece's past and long before it arrived at our shop, it was carefully converted into a ring. The closed-back diamond and silver face was mounted atop an elegantly refined 14k white gold band, enhanced with pinched and beveled shoulders. This update gives the diamond component new life, and ensures that the piece is able to be worn and enjoyed as it deserves.

Rose cut diamonds are fascinating remnants of history in that they proudly embody and display the hand-craftsmanship of their original creators, every facet and plane so preciously imperfect. It is precisely this human touch that inspirits old cuts with their old world artistry and bygone allure, neither of which can quite be replicated by the exactitude of machine-cut gems or modern hands. Given their 220+ year age, these diamonds bear the evidence of time and use, with slight nibbling at several edges. Even so, their stability is not compromised, as they remain wonderfully intact within their original setting and are not loose at all. In fact, they are in remarkable shape for their seniority, and are ready for a lifetime of joyful wear.

A note about foiled diamonds: The diamond is closed back and appears to be foiled. Foiling was a clever trick of the trade in which slips of foil were carefully placed in the cupped setting beneath the semi-translucent gemstones of choice, achieving a stunning glimmer in low candlelight which reflected the fire flames in dazzling brilliance. The effect of foil backing is characteristic of Georgian and early to mid Victorian jewelry, as it created a hypnotic twinkle under historic candlelit lighting conditions, prior to the invention of electricity.

One must keep in mind that the original owner for whom this cross was originally crafted did not occupy the kind of lifestyle or perform the same tasks we do today. This being the case, this foiled diamond relic was simply never intended or designed to withstand today's living. So, while this foiled jewelry is especially alluring attribute for collectors, they are quite vulnerable to water damage if even slightly wet. Water causes foil to discolor and darken, to somewhat dissolve, and it can get trapped between the stone and the setting. Thus, to prolong the life of secondhand jewelry, it should not be worn during physical activities and buyers should be mindful of condition notes and any presence of treatment-specific care.

The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
