General Information:

  • US Size: 7.75-8
  • Total Carat Weight: 1.17 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: 2.81 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: Solid Platinum
  • Dimensions: The center diamond mount measures 6.50 mm north to south and the accent diamond studded shoulders measure 3.00-3.10 mm north to south. The face of the ring spans about 18.40 mm east to west across the finger, measured from one outermost accent diamond point to the other. The center diamond mount rises about 7.10 mm from the finger (depth/height), while the accent diamond studded shoulders rise 2.50-3.40 mm from the finger. The band tapers from about 2.50 mm wide at the shoulder endpoints to 2.00 mm at the base of the shank (rear).
  • Weight: A very nice weight of 4.37 grams
  • Markings: The interior of this ring is marked on one side with 10% IRID PLAT, indicating this piece’s platinum fabrication. The other side is marked with a hand-inscribed 7. 4 (or 7.5?). Both marks are partially obscured from decades and decades of loving wear and use.
  • Era:  This engagement ring is believed to date to the 1950s, though could be a bit earlier from the late 1940s. It exhibits iconic Mid Century design, as fully described in the text. Beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enable us to determine, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range or history than this without knowledge of the piece’s exact provenance.
  • Buyer Notes:  This diamond engagement ring is a true rarity, featuring an extremely unusual central diamond with a bespoke faceting matrix that is a mix between a cushion cut, a rectangular brilliant cut and an emerald cut. Its vacillating coloration and hazy clarity together mark this diamond as entirely one of a kind, and wholly distinct from the sea of standardized colorless diamonds on the market. This diamond has been certified by the GIA under report number 1216405348; the GIA report notes that this center diamond has also been laser-inscribed (microscopically) with the coordinating GIA report number. A digital copy of this report is pictured, and the physical report will convey to the new owner with the transaction. A physical copy of an appraisal for this ring (conducted on September 10, 2021 and concluding a replacement value of $6,450) will also convey to the new owner with the transaction. Further video requests are welcomed, as we understand that this diamond ring’s colors are unusual and can fluctuate in varying lights and settings, rendering its exceptional qualities difficult to precisely capture. Please kindly note that one side of the center diamond's platinum basket setting shows a minuscule fissure (as pictured) in the arc element, which is not loose in place. This quality was present when the shop acquired the ring AND when the ring was appraised, so the appraisal is reflects its presence. Such an imperfection is expected of antique, vintage and secondhand jewelry and neither compromises the ring's integrity nor detracts from its beauty. The next caretaker may have it rectified by their preferred jeweler post-purchase for a very nominal rate (typically this kind of standard maintenance service runs about $50 or less). It is important to keep this in mind while considering purchase of this piece.
  • Appraised Value: The appraised replacement value (for insurance purposes) of this ring, inclusive of all stones, metals and other characteristic properties, is $6,450 USD. The appraisal service is, itself, valued at $175, and was conducted on September 10, 2021. This appraisal conveys with the purchase of this ring.

The Story:

A fabulously uncommon twist on the classic mid century era engagement ring, this ring features a spread of sparkling diamonds abundant in personality. The style of this ring is very typical of the height of the 1950s, exhibiting elements that were very much en vogue during the period. Such elements include the center stone’s four corner prongs recalling floral-like blooms, and the backdrop of bright accent diamonds mounted within scalloped ‘fishtail’ settings that give way to a sleek knife edge band that rounds the shank.

Mid Century aestheticism focused on clean modularity with touches of visual softness for balance, and while one can envision this description in application to beloved MCM furniture, it most certainly applies to other decorative arts including fashion, products, architecture, and fine jewelry. Indeed, a sweeping Mid Century design theory pushed the notion of bringing nature’s exemplary principles into the everyday life, utilizing the strength of pared down linearity with precision in structure so as to redirect the focus to beautified rationality within design. Form followed function, allowing the genius of technology to lead design’s charge and elevate even the most mundane components of modern living.

When it came to the wearable arts-- fashion and jewelry-- the roots of these ideas were harnessed to create fresh designs that were proudly distinct from the frills and ornamentality of the preceding decades. Simply put, design moved toward a more minimalist approach, marrying the inherent beauty of nature’s creations (the ring’s colorful diamonds) with the highly skilled craftsmanship of man’s creations (the ring’s chic platinum form). In its essence, this engagement ring is a striking demonstration of a profound design movement, and yet exists as an ultra wearable, perfectly timeless jewel roughly 70 years later.

Centering this ring is a very rare natural colored diamond, which has been certified by the GIA as a “Fancy Light Brown-Yellow”. This diamond possesses impressive coloration that the GIA declares is evenly distributed throughout. The diamond is considered very slightly included for, what is known in the industry as, ‘clouds’ that are not able to be pinpointed in a graph or to the eye because of their larger nature that reaches beyond the bounds of the cut diamond at hand. This means that the rough stone from which this diamond was originally cut developed cloudy patches over its billions of years of formation, a characteristic that is something of Mother Nature’s fingerprint. In quite a literal sense, no two diamonds are alike, and the development of this color and this cloudy disposition denote this diamond as a virtual rarity, microscopically the only one exactly like it to exist.

To the eye, we can observe the color-cloud duality in the stone’s amazing chroma and hazy appearance, both notably captivating traits. The clouds produce a subdued ethereality, where the diamond’s colors shimmer in a more diffused manner, communicating with the eye in swells of nebulous luster rather than the flashiness found in other standard diamonds not bearing the fancy colored and cloudy titles. Of further intrigue is this center diamond’s tonal variance depending on the type and intensity of the light source: this diamond visually appears to range in color from warm grayish to greenish-gray, sometimes honey-gray and even golden champagne. In low light, it seems to deepen in color to a rich chocolatey-cognac, while in bright light it seems to lighten to its primary color of champagne. Colored diamonds are truly wondrous in the way that their sparkle is understatedly expressive, the color of such stones causing light to refract in bewitching jewel tones and twinkling bursts.

Framing this unique center diamond like crisp white wings are six antique single cut diamonds. These stones line the shoulders in architectural rigidity, counterbalancing the visual heft of the fancy diamond with airy brightness. The outermost shoulder diamonds sit within semi bezeled mounts, as the knife edge band extends up to an arrow point on both sides. This small added detail defines the ring across the finger, and hearkens to the geometric designs of the Art Deco period several decades before this ring’s creation. From all angles, this engagement ring has a sophisticated presence, and boldly stands out for its featured fancy diamond.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
