  • Buyer Notes: Absolutely and without a doubt, this ring is an astounding treasure made by the famed 'Jeweler to the Stars', Harry Winston. Aside from its distinguished maker-- who stands among the jewelry greats of history, including Tiffany & Co., Cartier, and others-- what makes this ring so special is its extraordinarily fine craftsmanship, the immense quality of its diamonds, and its beautifully modest scale and design. Indeed, this ring's lovely modesty is exactly what sets it apart from the loads of showy Harry Winston pieces on the market, AND what makes it an affordable designer ring straight out of an iconic period in history.
  • Valuation: At the time of research and listing, this ring is the only one of its kind available on the open market. For its rarity, quality, age and history alone, it has a professionally assessed value of at least $2,880, a value which does not also reflect its very famous maker. Keeping in mind that this ring is marked for Harry Winston, the value can increase up to three times that amount or more (that's a whopping $8,640+), depending on the dealer or appraiser. This is not a formal, written appraisal, but may be helpful when considering your investment into this virtually one of a kind heirloom.

The Story:

Feminine, symbolic and wonderfully emblematic of an entire era, this diamond engagement ring is quietly unique for its kind. Crafted by the exceptionally famous jewelry house under designer Harry Winston, this ring is delightfully divergent from the swath of contemporaneous HW pieces on the market, which by comparison, tend to lean more big, bold and ostentatious. In refined contrast, this ring shows a sophisticated aesthetic highlighting the sleek simplicity of an edited composition.

The ring's conception is true to its era, and features the two tone gold look that was wildly popular during the 1940s. As WWII ensued, the use of platinum was reserved strictly for wartime efforts and machinery, causing a rise in the use of white gold or palladium (a white gold alloy) in its stead. In kind, this ring's face is made with white gold so as to cleverly accentuate the brightness and size of the diamonds therein.

The quality of the diamonds is impressive, yet their allure is made all the more profound by the chic design of the setting. The central diamond is held in a squared floret mount which stands just proud of the shoulders. Four double corner prongs wrap the stone while allowing maximum light to pass through and refract in rainbows off of the diamond's facets. The side stones are mounted in bead prong settings which add a kiss of sparkle from all angles.

The ring's gallery is equally romantic, which a three-petaled crisp floral feature on both the north and south profiles of the center setting. Angular, cutout scalloping traces the shoulders and brings vivid interest to an often overlooked area of the ring. The shank is smooth and beveled, offering a very comfortable fit that pairs excellently with both yellow gold and other white golds.

As is true with all vintage and antique jewelry, this ring's motif boasts symbolism that impresses beyond outward beauty. The three petaled flower that decorates the gallery is a stylized Sagittaria Latifolia (or Sagittaria Cuneata) flower, also colloquially known as either Arrowhead or Katniss. This kind of flower grows in shallow wetlands, under full sunlight, with broad arrowhead-shaped leaves, edible tubers and identifiable white petals which grow in whorls of three-- as is displayed in this ring. These flowers are astoundingly bright white, their snowy complexion captivating against the muddy shorelines in which they grow.

Correspondingly, the triplet of petals forms a triangle, which is itself a spiritually sacred form, and alludes to the Triune of God: Father (steady caretaker), Son (freely given redemption) and Spirit (affectionate counselor). The triangle is the sturdiest shape when utilized in the real world, giving applicable credence to its divine structure. Furthermore, the shape is often understood as representative of holy marriage, where one point equates to one spouse, another point to their partner, and the third point to their Creator, who lovingly binds them together in matrimony. When beheld with these manifold meanings, this stunning ring becomes even more charming.

A note about the center diamond: the Transitional Cut is the diamond cut that bridged the 19th century Old European Cut as it 'transitioned' into the mid-20th century Modern Round Brilliant cut, which is the standard faceting system used today. A desirable trait of true Transitionals is the tiny culet present at the centerpoint of this stone's eye-catching faceting matrix. This culet is one of the hallmarks that collectors so love about this short-lived diamond cut, which denotes its origins to a brief window of time between the late 1920s and the early 1940s.

Existing today as a representative of this pivotal sliver of time to jewelry history, this diamond boasts elements of antique hand-faceted diamonds while looking ahead to the dawn of machine cut diamonds, giving it a distinct geometry that creates a dazzling flash that modern stone cuts simply do not possess. This diamond is rare, and coveted for its scarcity and sheer beauty. In suit, the delicate side diamonds were hand cut to complement the essence of the center stone, and while imperceptible to the naked eye, these two accent stones bear the subtleties of hand-craftsmanship.

Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.
