  • Total Carat Weight: This ring is estimated to be between 1-1.15ctw
  • Total Precious Metal Weight: 2.87 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material:  14-15k rosy yellow gold. This antique yellow gold is warm and buttery with a time-earned patina that is deeply desirable by collectors.
  • Dimensions: This ring measures 10.37 mm north to south on the ring face x 10.24 mm east to west. The shoulders are structured bevel shaped and taper from 4.13 mm wide at the shoulders to 1.95 mm at the base of the shank. This ring rises about 6.20 mm from the finger.
  • Weight: An incredible 4.46 grams, which is rare and notable for a ring of this style.
  • Markings: One interior shoulder shows two stamps: one stamp is the serial/manufacture number for the pattern of the ring and the other is the manufacturer. What is believed to read "5500" is the serial number, and below is "B B & B" in serif type, which indicates the renowned, incomparably important jewelry house Bailey Banks & Biddle.
  • Era: Circa 1880s-1900s
  • Buyer Notes: Please kindly note that the girdle of the center stone shows a flea bite commensurate with the ring's age and affectionate wear over its roughly 140 year life. While not readily perceptible to the unaided and untrained eye, the nick is pictured for transparency, and does not detract from the ring's beauty, brilliance and allure. Indeed, such characteristics are considered by this shop to be treasured evidence of loving use and historic classification.

The Story:

A late Victorian relic, this glorious cluster ring matches the design and construction of antique diamond rings dating to between 1880 and 1900. By the 1910s, during the pre WWI-era and pre-Art Deco years, consumers favored designs that raised the diamonds even higher above the finger. In fact, the concept of a diamond setting raised atop the band was conceived first by the famed Tiffany & Co., who subsequently patented the idea. With diamonds raised in prong settings above the finger, maximum light could pass into and through the stones for utmost brightness and refractivity.

Up until this point, diamonds were set low within the band (not raised) and many times were closed back and foiled, no doubt lovely, but not ideal for the ultimate sparkle effect. By the end of the 19th century, pierced and pronged mountings rose to popularity and by the 1910s, open filigree in floral and geometric patterns were most fashionable. But between the 1880s and the early 1900s, low profile daisy-like floral allusionary design was en vogue, very discreetly recalling the designs of past generations, including Georgian cluster rings and Victorian giardinetti (Italian for 'little garden(s)') rings.

This ring is signed "BB&B", for Bailey Banks & Biddle. Bailey Banks & Biddle is technically the oldest jeweler in America, and is known for an impressive array of projects and historic specialties, including heirloom jewels for prominent American figures, famed Civil War swords, the Mortuary Medal for President Abraham Lincoln and badges such as the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, and the Silver and Bronze Stars. While this maker is extraordinarily famous, there are relatively few examples of their work on the open market, making pieces that are circulating both rare and highly sought after. Bearing the BB&B stamp is an honor and a amplifier of value in jewelry history.

This ring was sold to the shop as being 0.86 to 0.90 ctw altogether. However, this estimation is low and incorrect because it was calculated according to the formula for Modern Round Brilliant (MRB) cut diamonds, and using the spread of the diamond (how wide it measures across when viewed head-on) to determine a corresponding carat weight. The MRB formula is perfectly appropriate for modern diamond cuts, produced from the 1950s, on. But, the MRB formula does not take into consideration the substantial heft of the faceting system of historic Old European and Old Mine Cut diamonds-- both of which are exhibited in this ring.

Therefore, we at the shop calculate this diamond using the historic formula which takes into consideration the proportions and ratios of historic cuts, including the roughly 44-53% or table sizes, the culets at the base of the diamonds and the stones' bulging sides and silhouettes. Using the historic-- and inherently more appropriate-- formula, we estimate that this center diamond is actually between 0.45 to 0.49 ct. So, while the diamond may have the width (spread) of a MODERN 0.36 ct diamond, its chunky profile reveals its covetable heft that boosts its carat weight to between 0.45 to 0.49 ct. This same concept is applied to each of the side diamonds, as they have the spreads of MODERN 0.05 ct-0.07 ct diamonds, they actually calculate out (using the historic formula) as larger stones. Altogether, these 8 side diamonds have a combined weight of 0.68 ctw.

As a conservative estimate using the historic OMC/OEC formula, we consider this diamond ring to boast a carat weight of at least 1 ctw; mathematical formulas place the carat weight at about 1.15 ctw.

Please kindly keep in mind that different jewelers, different dealers and different appraisers vary in the formula they use to determine the carat weight of a diamond. In order to provide our shoppers with the truest carat weight that we can, we use the most appropriate formula according to the exact cut of the stone present. Worthy of mentioning, there are some nature carbon inclusions on the interior of some of the stones, as pictured. These are organic fingerprints left by Mother Nature during the billions of years long formation of the diamonds deep within the earth. These are not readily visible to the unaided eye and are most cleverly camouflaged by the faceting systems of the diamonds. Such is the intelligent draw of antique diamonds!

Sale Terms: Sale prices are only valid within the prescribed sale window, unless otherwise stated by Revival Fine Jewelry or agreed upon between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer. To maintain business sustainability and general fairness, individual customers are not entitled to exclusive notification of, or owed access to, store sales antecedently. Orders processed prior to a promotion or sale, items placed on layaway prior to a sale, and payments paid through layaway prior to a sale will not be retroactively adjusted to reflect sale pricing or terms.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.

More information on these, and more, topics may be found in the shop policies.
