  • Total Carat Weight: Conservative estimate of 0.91 ct (please read more about this carat weight in the specifications below)
  • Total Precious Metal Weight: 2.87 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 14k warm, patinaed yellow gold

  • Markings: The interior of the shank is marked "14K"
  • Era: This style ring was particularly popular between the last quarter of the 19th century and the 1920s. With this in mind and given the mounting style, stamp and diamond faceting matrix, this ring is estimated to date to between the 1890s and the 1910s.
  • Buyer Notes: Please kindly keep in mind that the gold mounting proudly evidences over a century of loving wear, and boasts the scuffs of time expected of an antique jewel of its age. As always, we opt to leave these marks exactly as they are as badges of honor, but they may certainly be buffed and polished out by the next caretaker's jeweler post-purchase if so desired.
  • Valuation: Comparable market research concludes an average market value for this ring of $7,020, while its estimated replacement value is between $8,575-$10,200. These are not formal, written appraisals, but may be helpful for prospective buyers considering their purchase.

The Story:

Featuring a wildly dazzling hand-cut Old European cut diamond, this effortlessly chic ring is bold, timeless and, undoubtedly, storied. This breathtaking heirloom is estimated to be well over 110 years old, dating to sometime between 1890 and the 1910s. The ring's silhouette is bulbous and distinguished, the curvaceousness of the gold mounting decidedly sensuous yet altogether refined. The ring's form is sophisticated and urbane, rendering its style genderless and, thus, wonderfully universal. It is a staple statement jewel, though is equally ideal as an engagement ring for the history-lover at heart.

Within the antique jewelry industry, this style mounting has long been referred to as a Gypsy ring, a term typically designated to rings containing one or more burnish-set diamond(s) and/or gemstone(s) within [typically gold] domed mountings, wherein the stones are relatively flush with the surface of the band's arc. This mounting technique is somewhat akin to a bezel setting, and is indeed aesthetically and functionally similar: the girdle of the set stones is protected by precious metal in both a Gypsy setting and a bezel setting, and in both, the crown stands proud of the metal band.

The "Gypsy" setting if very often mistakenly interchanged with the "Belcher" setting. However, the two setting styles denote two separate fabrication methods. The Belcher technique, named after its creator Thomas Belcher, was one of the first of its kind designed to ‘lift’ the featured gemstone above the finger through the use of prongs, so that the stone hovers above the metal band so as to allow light to pass through. Belcher settings are identified by their unique prong style, wherein the prongs are cut directly out of the band itself, and appear to swell forward from the band as it grips the stone. Please reference this ring from our sold archives to view how a Belcher setting differs from the Gypsy setting of this listing.

Such style rings were initially favored by gentlemen given the rings' stoutly form and rather architectural appearance. Even so, they quickly came to be much beloved by women as well, and by the turn of the century, the feminine variations were often embellished with engraved starburst-like stone settings, swirling cymas, floral motifs, and the like.

The "Gypsy" description is said to derive from the Victorian era: historically, aristocrats and those with means occupied townhomes in the heart of the city and a sprawling estate in the open country. It was standard routine to travel between the two depending on social obligations, season, need and more. Both men and women donned an abundance of valuable jewelry during this period, and would travel with these, their most prized possessions, between homes. The oftentimes long journey to the country posed the risk of highway robbery en route, given that the wealthy and their expensive cargo could become targets along the way. The story goes that the design of Gypsy rings became more and more preferred by the genteel because their design ceded the featured gems as far less visually prominent (being that they were not in basket or prong settings above the finger) and much less ostentatious, ergo the precious stones were less likely to be preyed upon or actually stolen.

So where does the term "Gypsy" enter into the equation? The Romani people have historically faced discrimination and have been labeled with slurs and negative stereotypes rooted in the falsehood that they are pilferers, thieves and bandits. The design of the ring was thought to avert "Gypsy" larceny. Today, this term is hotly debated, and though it refers to an entire style of jewelry that is seeing a massive comeback, it is also offensive. Many in the jewelry world are transitioning away from this outmoded and disrespectful language, and choosing descriptors such as burnish set or flush set instead.

Being a lover of antique jewelry does not mean being a lover of antiquated verbiage and tropes! It is important to educate ourselves of the history behind the jewelry we so adore, to always seek a heightened awareness of the terms that we use to describe our jewelry, and to know when historically-accepted wording is overdue for a more compassionate improvement.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
