General Information:

  • US Size: This ring sits right between a 4.75 and 5.00 on the shop mandrel (if resizing is necessary, buyers are strongly encouraged to have their trusted jeweler assess the ring for sizability prior to purchase).
  • Total Precious Metal Weight: 1.42 dwt
  • Total Stone Weight: 2.02 ct
  • Precious Metal Material: 14k yellow gold
  • Weight: 2.20 grams
  • Dimensions: This ring faces up 9.70 mm north to south, and rises approximately 5.50 mm from the finger. The shoulders taper from approximately 3.80 mm to an ultra slender 1.33 mm at the base of the shank.
  • Markings: The interior of this band is stamped "14K". There is no maker's mark present.
  • Era: The mounting is believed to date to approximately 1900, and the diamond is believed to date to the last quarter of the 20th century or later.
  • Buyer Notes: While the present diamond is newer than its mounting, the stone's table and depth percentages harken to the ratios of antique cut diamonds; the table is ever so slightly smaller than the standard for modern brilliants, and likewise, the depth is relatively deeper. The effect of this diamond's proportions is an alluring mix of old and new aesthetics, perfectly suited for its geometrically feminine mounting.
  • Certifications: This shop has had an appraisal performed for this ring so as to have the most appropriate pricing to aptly reflect the ring’s excellent qualities. Please note that the replacement value declared on the appraisal is $15,355.00. The diamond has also been graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) filed under report number 2211026131, the results of which have informed the specifications herein. Kindly note that the appraisal marks an estimated diamond depth, while the GIA marks the exact diamond depth. Both the signed professional appraisal and the GIA report will convey with the purchase of this ring.

The Story:

Wholly individual, beautifully moody and superbly refined, this antique solitaire ring centers an exceptionally rare and impressively sized 2.02 carat diamond. This diamond exudes subliminal wonder, its coloration an earthy gray that fluctuates between a golden-olive, a deep cognac and a slate bluish-silver depending on the light and context. This diamond is certified by the GIA as a "Natural Fancy Gray", a standout stone unenhanced by human hands. Diamonds of this grading are so scarce, in fact, that their quantity is significantly less than those that fall within the yellow, champagne, brown and pink ranges, so much less that their number is nearly impossible to estimate. Making the diamond even more of a catch is its size, as fancy diamond weights over the 2 carat mark dramatically increase their value. Upon listing, the average market price for available, loose (unmounted) 2.00-2.05 carat Natural Fancy Gray diamonds range between $11,725 and $22,700 depending on cut, clarity and carat weight.

Three of history's most famous diamonds are categorized as gray diamonds: the Hope Diamond is a Fancy Deep Grayish Blue, originally obtained in 1666 weighing 115 carats and over 23 grams, though today exists in the re-cut state for which is much beloved, weighing in at 45.52 ct; the Sultan of Morocco Diamond is a Fancy Grayish Blue that weighs 35.27 carats, and bears a mysterious history originating in the Kollur Mines of Golconda, India, and takes off around 1840 in Russia; and the the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond, a Fancy Deep Grayish Blue of (now) 31.06 carats, the earliest records for which were lost during the Spanish Civil War, and the whereabouts of which were unknown for a time when the stone disappeared after the 1958 Brussels World's Fair.

The diamond at hand proudly wears the fingerprints of Mother Nature left during the stone's billions of years of formation: the diamond's hazy disposition is due to broad organic cloud inclusions that sweep the stone in lovely uniformity, causing the even distribution of natural gray chroma to seemingly glow from within. The color itself is owed to the presence of hydrogen atoms in addition to particular traces of boron and nitrogen. As such, fancy gray diamonds will often exhibit a spectrum of undertones, including blues, greens and browns. The present diamond does just that, boasting a most romantic opalescence with a revival style mounting to complement the diamond's uncommon drama.

The mounting is utterly striking and unwaveringly elegant. It is cast in 14k buttery yellow gold, with an array of hand-engraved finishing details throughout. The shoulders are swept with wheat engraved designs that terminate on one end into the east and west claw prongs atop the stone's table, and meet on the other as the lovingly time-worn rear shank. The north and south galleries of the ring are a thoughtful marriage of geometry and florals, with simplified cutouts rather than lacy filigree. The gold setting is at once architectural and organic: it recalls the pointed arches, flying buttresses and ribbed vaulting of the Gothic (12th-16th centuries) and Neo-Gothic/Gothic Revival (late 18th and 19th centuries) persuasions, while also distinctly reminiscent of the unfurling lotus blooms and hieroglyphic mark-making of the Egyptian Revivalism that reigned over western design during the early 1900s through the 1920s. Particularly boosting a resurgence of interest in Egyptian motifs during the Pre-Deco and Art Deco movements was the discovery of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun's tomb and all its glorious treasures in 1922.

The mounting's uniqueness is elevated by the symbolism revealed through its elements: the Gothic elements speak to the meditative spirituality of Cathedrals and the protective fortitude of castles, and the Egyptian elements speak to the purified transformation that lotus blooms embody. The wheat engraved shoulders seem to weave the two aesthetics together, which reflect a blessing of abundance and prosperity in marriage. In perfect response, the color of the diamond itself is believed to illustrate transcendence, enlightenment and new beginnings.

Sale Terms: Sale prices are only valid within the prescribed sale window, unless otherwise stated by Revival Fine Jewelry or agreed upon between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer. To maintain business sustainability and general fairness, individual customers are not entitled to exclusive notification of, or owed access to, store sales antecedently. Orders processed prior to a promotion or sale, items placed on layaway prior to a sale, and payments paid through layaway prior to a sale will not be retroactively adjusted to reflect sale pricing or terms.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.

In exchange for offering interest-free plans, customers agree to abide and uphold the following nonnegotiable terms and conditions:
