General Information:

  • US Size:  This ring sits at a 5.75 on the shop mandrel, though due to the nature of the ring's shape and construction, it fits like a snug 5.25, or a less-snug 5.00; please kindly keep in mind that while its mandrel-size reads as larger, it will not fit on a 5.75 finger without being sized.
  • Total Carat Weight:  1.00 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight:  Approximately 2.95 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material:  The face of the ring (which likely began life either mounted within a different ring or as a fichu lace pin) tests as 18k rose gold, while the later-added band is marked and tests for 18k yellow gold. The central rose cut diamond is mounted in silver.
  • Dimensions:  This ring faces up 14.85 mm north to south (length) x 12.25 mm east to west (width), with a rise of about 5.75 mm from the finger to the very tip of the rose cut diamond. The band's width measures 4.20 mm all the way around, and is a "D-Shaped" beveled form, with a depth/rise of approximately 1.30 mm or so.
  • Weight:  An wonderfully weighty 4.59 grams
  • Markings:  The primary component, the ring face, is not marked. The band is stamped to indicate the shank's purity of 18 karats.
  • Era:  The pearl, diamond and enamel face of the ring is believed to date to the late Georgian period, circa 1780 to 1800, per archival research. The band was clearly a later addition, likely fitted by a descendant of the original owner, as a way to make a family heirloom more wearable. As such, the current conversion state of the piece is exactly how this shop acquired it, and therefore, is exactly how we are offering it for sale. Without knowing the exact provenance of the elements, a more precise date range cannot be ascertained.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring is a fabulous collector's item, and is a special window back in time. It expresses many iterations of time, and is preserved as a wearable evolution of history and loving wear. Though imperfect here and there, this ring is beyond lovely, an elegant heirloom worthy of generations more of enjoyment. Please note that the interior of the band shows some scratching left behind by a visit to the jeweler's bench at some point in its history, though these cannot be felt when the ring is worn. Likewise, the band's ends affixed to the rear of the face are not felt when worn. Indeed, this ring is remarkably comfortable and a wonderful addition to any jewelry box!

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Diamond
  • Center Stone Count: One (1)
  • Center Stone Carat Weight:  About 0.30 ct, by formula using the estimated dimensions of 4.25 x 3.75 mm (see below) and per the specific gravity of diamond. The exact carat weight cannot be determined unless the diamond is removed from its historic setting and weighed. As such, this is a professional approximation and should be regarded as such.
  • Center Stone Dimensions:  Estimated to be about 4.25 x 3.75 mm including the edges of the stone which are wrapped within the silver pinched setting, though the visible measurements of the diamond are about 3.95 x 3.05 mm.
  • Center Stone Shape:  Oval Rose Cut
  • Center Stone Color Grade:  L-M, with a warm chromatic effect
  • Center Stone Clarity Grade:  SI; foiling of the diamond renders the color and clarity as estimations
  • Side Stone Type: Pearl
  • Side Stone Count:  Fourteen (14)
  • Side Stone Carat Weight:  0.70 ctw by formula per the pearls' dimensions and using the specific gravity of pearl
  • Side Stone Dimensions:  2.15-2.65 mm (an exact breakdown of the dimensions and carat weights for each of the 14 pearls can be provided upon request)
  • Side Stone Shape: Halved/split pearls
  • Side Stone Color Grade:  Ecru to warm cream with a kiss of golden undertones
  • Side Stone Clarity Grade:  Nacre is generally worn, though these pearls do glow with a subtle orient; two pearls appear to be historic replacements and are a bit whiter in color with less-worn nacre. Please reference the photos provided to evaluate these time-earned characteristics and ask any questions you may have.

    The Story:

A beguiling jewel indeed, this elegant Georgian ring is wonderfully worn in all the best ways, bright in cobalt color and symbolic in design. The ring face features a quite sizable, roughly 4.25 mm long twinkling rose cut diamond, which was cut by hand and carefully mounted within a pinched collet bezeled setting. This old gem centers a concentrically oval backdrop of semi-translucent, vivid royal blue enameling that highlights handcrafted etch-work beneath. The handcrafted design can be classified as basse-taille enamel work, and given the piece's age, exists as an example of pre-machined guilloché. Prior to machine-turned designs, all such detailing was painstakingly completed by the hand of a skilled metalworker. The translucence of the enamel allows light to bounce in and out and iridesce atop the carved metal beneath, giving the color a distinctly vivid and metallic effect. Under significant magnification, one can perceive super subtle imperfections of the geometric linework, offering a most charming reminder of the design's handcrafted origins.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the use of either blue Bristol glass or deep, cobalt blue enameling was designed to be a beguiling allusion to the depth and mystery of the heavens. Rings of this nature, which were often embellished with diamond “stars” and/or pearl "clouds" or "celestial billows" throughout-- were known as 'Bagues au Firmament', translating from French to mean “Rings of the Heavens”. They were popularized primarily by Marie Antoinette in the 1780s, owing to her intrigue of breakthroughs in astronomy of the era, which illuminated and influenced science, art, faith and fashion. True to the 'Bagues au Firmament' spirit, the blue face of this piece is punctuated by a standout diamond "star" encircled by a warm pearl surround. The effect is otherworldly, altogether captivating and strikingly sublime.

The gem-encrusted component that makes up the face of the ring is believed to date to the late Georgian period, circa 1780 to 1800, per archival research. It appears to have begun life as either a fichu lace pin or as a ring, but was later retrofitted with a new (or different) band, as we see today. This band, being clearly a later addition, was likely an addition commissioned by a descendant of the original owner as a way to make a family heirloom more wearable for younger generations and as tastes evolved. As such, the current converted state of the piece is exactly how this shop acquired it, and therefore, is exactly how we are offering it for sale.

A note about foiled diamonds: The diamond is closed back and appears to be foiled. Foiling was a clever trick of the trade in which slips of foil were carefully placed in the cupped setting beneath the semi-translucent gemstones of choice, achieving a stunning glimmer in low candlelight which reflected the fire flames in dazzling brilliance. The effect of foil backing is characteristic of Georgian and early to mid Victorian jewelry, as it created a hypnotic twinkle under historic candlelit lighting conditions, prior to the invention of electricity.

One must keep in mind that the original owner for whom this cross was originally crafted did not occupy the kind of lifestyle or perform the same tasks we do today. This being the case, this foiled diamond relic was simply never intended or designed to withstand today's living. So, while this foiled jewelry is especially alluring attribute for collectors, they are quite vulnerable to water damage if even slightly wet. Water causes foil to discolor and darken, to somewhat dissolve, and it can get trapped between the stone and the setting. Thus, to prolong the life of secondhand jewelry, it should not be worn during physical activities and buyers should be mindful of condition notes and any presence of treatment-specific care.

Sale Terms: Sale prices are only valid within the prescribed sale window, unless otherwise stated by Revival Fine Jewelry or agreed upon between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer. To maintain business sustainability and general fairness, individual customers are not entitled to exclusive notification of, or owed access to, store sales antecedently. Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
