General Information:

  • US Size: 4⅞ (right between a size 4.75 and 5.00) and sizable by the buyer's preferred jeweler post-purchase.
  • Total Carat Weight: This ring is estimated to be 0.70 ctw
  • Precious Metal Weight: 0.95 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 18k yellow gold band with 800-900 silver face inset with diamonds. This antique yellow gold is warm and buttery and the silver likewise beautifully aged, their patinas time-earned that is deeply desirable by collectors.
  • Dimensions: The face of the ring measures 6.41 mm north to south (width) and 19.00 mm east to west (length from one outermost diamond setting to the opposite). It rises about 2.3 mm from the finger, and the central culet drops about 1 mm below its setting on the interior of the shank.
  • Weight: 1.47 grams
  • Markings: Unmarked but tested
  • Era: This ring dates to the earliest decades of the 19th century, circa 1840-1860, as it hails from the Early Victorian period. It is possible that the ring may have originally had a cupped closed back mounting for the center stone. If it did have this, it would have likely been foiled, and at some point in the piece's history, that closed and foiled backing was removed in order to allow the light to maximize the diamond's sparkle and also allow the ring to be water-safe. However, it might also be that this ring was designed exactly as it exists today, and never had a closed back. Without knowing an exact provenance, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range or history beyond what our years of collecting, researching and procuring have taught us.
  • Buyer Notes: The center stone has a visual spread of a modern ~0.25-0.29 ct diamond, but its immense depth and faceting heft add surface area, and therefore carat weight. Its culet extends beyond the mounting, so it does press onto the finger when worn. It can’t be felt and is not uncomfortable, but it will leave an indention. The stone also has some wiggle in-mount, and one shoulder shows a little more wear than the other (see pictures), as a small fissure can be noted. These characteristics are not unusual for pieces of this age, and may be easily and economically amended post-purchase if so desired. As is always recommended with all purchases of antique and secondhand jewelry, it’s best to have everything checked and prongs tightened prior to enjoyment!

The Story:

Hailing from the end of the Georgian era (1714-1837) to the earliest years of the Victorian era (1837-1901), this exquisite diamond ring is scarce on the market, wholly desirable by antique enthusiasts for its wonderful hand-craftsmanship and dramatic details. These diamonds are chunky, tall and boast the confident heft that collectors seek in such antique stones.

The design of the ring recalls a 'purist' version of the iconic giardinetti-- Italian for 'little garden(s)'-- ring that was so popular during the Georgian and Victorian years. Such rings were asymmetrically and romantically Rococo in origin, with refined yet sensuous floral motifs that conveyed a sense of abundance, fruitfulness and vitality. Yet, this ring's composition is less 'wild' in effect, and emphasizes the alluring restraint and demure enchantment of Victorian taste. It is this stylization that assists in determining the ring's age: late 18th century giardinetti rings are rather rolling in design, voluptuous in contours and have a sweeping, dynamic effect, while early to mid 19th century giardinetti rings feel more ceremoniously subdued, with sophisticated balance and polished in sensitivity.

Even with this Victorian period 'cleaned up' appearance, this ring boasts unbelievable drama and might, its petite scale overpowered by the diamonds' bright and vivid faceting. The floral allusions are found in the outermost tulip-shaped diamond settings that frame the center trio of stones-- which, itself, harkens to the Arabesque quatrefoils found in Ancient Revivalism design that swept through Europe and America during the first half of the Victorian era. The ring's silver content, which is closer to the 800s range than strictly sterling, indicates that it is of continental make. Indeed, the delicate and fastidious craftsmanship are gorgeously feminine, and likely evidence French origins.

On calculating the carat weight: This ring was sold to the shop as housing a 0.25 center diamond. However, this estimation is both low and incorrect because it was calculated according to the formula for Modern Round Brilliant (MRB) cut diamonds, using the spread of the diamond (how wide it measures across when viewed head-on) to determine a corresponding carat weight. The MRB formula is perfectly appropriate for modern diamond cuts, produced from the 1950s, on. But, the MRB formula does not take into consideration the substantial heft of the faceting system of historic Old European and Old Mine Cut diamonds.

Therefore, we at the shop calculate the carat weights of all the present Old Mine diamonds using the historic formula which takes into consideration the proportions and ratios of historic cuts, including the roughly 50% or smaller table sizes, the culets at the bases of the diamonds, and the stones' bulging sides and silhouettes. Using the historic-- and inherently more appropriate-- formula, we estimate that the center diamond is actually between 0.41 to 0.45 ct. So, while the diamond may have the width (spread) of a MODERN 0.25 ct diamond, its chunky profile reveals its covetable heft that boosts its carat weight to between 0.41 to 0.45 ct. This same concept is applied to each of the side diamonds, as they have the spreads of MODERN 0.03 to 0.08 ct diamonds, they actually calculate out (using the historic formula) as larger stones. Altogether, these four side diamonds have a combined weight of 0.27 ctw in addition to the central stone.

As a conservative estimate using the historic OMC/OEC formula, we consider this diamond ring to boast a carat weight of about 0.70 ctw in summation.

Please kindly keep in mind that different jewelers, different dealers and different appraisers vary in the formula they use to determine the carat weight of a diamond. In order to provide our shoppers with the truest carat weight that we can, we use the most appropriate formula according to the exact cut of the stone present. Worthy of mentioning, there are some nature carbon inclusions on the interior of some of the stones, as pictured. These are organic fingerprints left by Mother Nature during the billions of years long formation of the diamonds deep within the earth. These are not readily visible to the unaided eye and are most cleverly camouflaged by the faceting systems of the diamonds. Such is the intelligent draw of antique diamonds!

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
