    • Precious Metal Weight: 2.99 dwt
    • Precious Metal Material: 14k yellow gold throughout with base metal pin stem
    • Dimensions:  This brooch measures 32.30 mm north to south (length excluding the rear hinged/convertor bail loop) x 32.45 mm east to west (width across) x 14.50 mm deep (including the pin stem and excluding the rear hinged/convertor bail loop)
    • Weight:  A very nice 4.66 grams
    • Markings:  The innermost concave reverse of this piece is stamped with a "14K" purity mark opposite, what appears to be, a curvy letter "W" maker's mark. We believe that this is the mark of the Whitehouse Brothers out of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Please read more about this below.
    • Era:  This brooch/pendant converter is believed to date to no earlier than 1898 and likely no later than 1900 or so.
    • Buyer Notes:  Proudly embodying the imperfections left by time, this beautiful and playful gold jewel, this piece is a steal of a deal for buyers hoping to snag a staple late Victorian-early Edwardian accessory at a very nominal rate! This converter brooch is both a sizable brooch and pendant, bearing a rear stem for lapel wear as well as a hinged bail loop for necklace wear. Boasting impressive weight and exciting presence in scale, this piece is an iconic style beloved by fashionable women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This is not at all unusual for antique jewels, and may be very easily and very economically rectified by the buyer's local jeweler post-purchase. Fortunately, their absence is not readily visible and does not at all detract from the piece's beauty and elegance. Even so, the price has been fairly adjusted to reflect this expected wear.

    The Story:

A gleaming celestial jewel, this brooch presents a classic Victorian motif in its ethereal depiction of the sun. The Victorians were immensely infatuated with symbolism and relaying hidden messages using imagery and the relationship between elements of design. The continued development of astronomy and world sciences sparked a keen interest in such subjects even within the social sphere, which in effect, influenced the fine arts, decorative arts, cultural tastes and design trends-- including fashion and jewelry. Perhaps the most well known of these trends is the phenomenon of Halley’s Comet jewelry.

Similarly, this antique converter brooch/pendant celebrates the immeasurable mystery and wild beauty of the cosmos. A miniature sun glowing in gold and gemstones, this jewel is designed to exhibit the dynamism of the sun, its radiating rays, and the gleaming blaze of its golden color. In the 'language' of Victorian celestial jewelry, the sun conveyed a sense of majesty and might and of authority and order. It was perceived as a venerable tribute of humanity's diminutiveness and life's brevity-- which are also two iconic themes of 18th and 19th century Memento Mori culture-- reminding the wearer to live each day to the full, in abundance, confidence and thankfulness.

This piece is believed to have been crafted by the Ohio-based jewelers the Whitehouse Brothers, and bears a 'W' mark inside its domed reverse. Whitehouse Brothers was originally founded in 1898 by brothers Joseph and William Whitehouse. Although the pair began their work using primarily gold as their choice precious metal, they eventually rose to fame for their well-made platinum jewelry. Solid platinum jewelry (versus platinum prongs or platinum-topped gold) was not standardized for use in jewelry until around 1900-1910, as the technology to craft solid platinum jewelry was not available until about 1895. All this being said, if this pendant-brooch was created by Whitehouse Brothers, then research shows that it would most likely date to between 1898-1900-- during the earliest genesis of the business before platinum production took center stage. This history reveals the unassuming import imbued in this humble jewel.

Indeed, Victorian pendants and brooches of this kind and age are common on the open market, exceptionally collectible by new and seasoned collectors alike, and just as stylish today as they were over a century and a half ago. While not too rare, this piece is priced to sell; its price tag reflects all its qualities, including its time-earned imperfections and character, as well as its impressive weight, high quality, good construction, and definite wearability and desirability.

The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
