  • Buyer Notes: This necklace is made of two components that possibly date to different periods. They are not necessarily original to one another, though they could have been purchased or gifted as separate, and subsequently paired together. They were procured as a single jewel, and so are offered as one. However, the locket is easily removed and replaced, as its connector is a spring ring which can accommodate any charm or pendant desired. The chain consists of double wheat chains flat-twisted together, which do show some light kinking when lying flat (pictured). Note that when the necklace is worn, it falls flat and the kinks are not visible. This piece shows traits of late Victorian design as well as traits of Art Deco design, though it cannot be precisely identified as strictly Edwardian, which is what makes this necklace so intriguingly unique.

The Story:

A fascinating piece, this necklace is a wearable record of the past and is beautifully composed of an Art Deco era chain with a late Victorian locket. The chain necklace is in a lariat style, with a central drop component that creates a ‘Y’ effect when worn. The chain shows very minor kinks, which are certainly expected from its age, which are pulled taut and are therefore unnoticeable when the necklace is on. The chain is made of a flatly twisted double wheat pattern, and connects at the nape of the neck with a spring ring clasp, which was patented around 1921 though used pre-patent, found all the way back in 1890s catalogs. Perhaps this chain dates, thus, to the Edwardian period which is classified as between 1901-1910, with a pearl detail that speaks to the coming Deco trends of rigid geometries.

The pearl portion of the chain is an upside down triangle outlined with 26 delicate pearls, and featuring a single, larger central seed pearl. Vertical, reticulated gold bars visually punctuate the piece, and add forward-looking Deco flair. The dropped chain that leads to the pendant attaches to the downward point of the pearl triangle, and is mounted with another spring ring at its base. This spring ring attaches the locket pendant, though it also allows the wearer to interchange pendants and charms with ease! As such, the effect of the necklace itself is one not too dissimilar from Victorian-era T-bar Albert chain style necklaces that are often lovingly repurposed as lariat necklaces today. Yet, this piece is decidedly elegant, a very graceful variation that does not lack in confidence.

The circle locket pendant appears to possibly predate the chain, as its styling can be found in mid 1870s through late 1890s jewelry catalogs. It was during this mid to late Victorian period that there was a rise in the middle and upper middle class populations, wherein people were able to afford to travel the world like never before and able to afford keepsakes and objects of luxury that have since become our families’ heirlooms. Here, a locket boasts a Middle Eastern inspired motif of a crescent moon and a single eight-pointed star, both celestial bodies encrusted with champagne-colored modified rose cut diamonds. The reverse of the pendant, which can also be clipped on to be the front-facing side, has a hand-inscribed monogram: “HER” (or “EHR” if read from the center, left and then right) in an Old English Gothic script. Though these initials belonged to the original owner of the piece, it cannot be missed that they read as the pronoun ‘her’, a coincidental merit to add to the femininity of the jewel.

The Victorians are well known for their love of messages through jewels: this waxing and waning moon form is believed to be a nurturing and watchful eye, a motherly protective agent for its wearer, and is affiliated with feminine energy, birth cycles, and connectedness. It reminds the wearer of life’s fragility while also encouraging the life-giving relationship with the Divine, as the cyclical nature of life is, itself, a story of ceaseless and promised redemption. Further, the company of a star alongside a crescent moon is a signature of multiple countries and cultures, as a symbol of spirituality and guidance. Further, the diamond gemstone speaks to emotional purity and new beginnings. They are believed to forge strength and fill emptiness with the richest love, while also solidifying authenticity of relationships. Finally, pearls are believed to be protective amulets, guarding the wearer from harm and suffering, while also bestowing grace and honor to the wearer.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
