The Story:

Hand blown and fashioned around the turn of the century, this oversized favrile glass scarab boasts an iridescent greenish-blue and teal. It is very clearly in the style of Tiffany & Co. Studios, who famously manufactured tinier versions that could be purchased loose and mounted however the buyer pleased. Other global competitors followed Tiffany’s lead and crafted their own variations, including Steuben (aurene glass) and Loetz. This piece could be signed on its base, which is hidden from the eye in its backed bezel setting. Even if it is not, it is important to remember that both Steuben and Loetz sold countless pieces unsigned, and though rarer, Tiffany pieces are also known to be authenticated unsigned.

Egyptian Revival jewelry, including and perhaps most memorably scarabs, gained popularity by the 1880s with the opening of the Suez Canal a few decades prior. The style began to trend again, and certainly influenced, the Art Deco period following the discovery of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen in 1922. For market context of period favrile glass scarab jewelry, consider the following: In 2011, PBS’ Antiques Roadshow appraised a necklace decorated with a trio of Tiffany favrile glass scarabs-- each one half the size of this one in the listing-- for $8,000 to $10,000 retail value. Such glass scarab pieces have remained desirable, and an authentic pre-1920 scarab ring of such an impressive size is a definite rarity today.

This glass scarab is bezel set in buttery 14k gold, the bezel rim fitted to the silhouette’s undulations, and the back of the scarab backed entirely in gold. The scarab appears to float atop the shank, with swirling shoulder components that cleverly connect the shank to the beetle’s bezel. The design is handsome and unique, and feels as if it could be in an ancient Egyptian style. Though bezeled, there are supplementary prongs that cling to the face of the glass; there were originally four prongs, though one has been lost to time. Even so, the beetle is not at all loose in its setting. It is possible that the gold backing and accompanying shank were added later, but still date as vintage.

Additionally, there is a small, dull chip below the top left prong when viewing the scarab straight-on (shown in the fourth photo just under the upper prong). This chip is stable and is not a threat to the glass’ strength and integrity. Further, it is not at all sharp to the touch, so the ring is perfectly wearable despite its presence. Because of the glass’ iridescence, the chip is quite nicely disguised. Note, too, that the diagonal 'lines' that sweep across the glass surface are from the molding of the glass and are not scratches.

This scarab is notable for its incredible coloration, the glass’ nature allowing light to fill it and pass through, enlivening the iridescent green, gold and bluish hues. The glass has a royal purple, indigo and cobalt blue sheen when angled in the light, and in low lighting, these colors appear intensified. Its massive scale is also of note: while most glass scarab jewelry of this era is far smaller, this piece is a whopping 35.2 mm north to south, and 23.5 mm east to west. The scarab’s design makes it a three-dimensional sculpture, a wearable work of art that cannot help but draw the eye and beckon conversation. It is nothing short of bold, and is the ideal statement piece, rich in history and curious style. This favrile glass insect ring is heavy, lavish and indubitably striking.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
