  • Precious Metal Weight: 1.66 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 18k white gold bearing a kiss of warmth that modern white gold alloys and their rhodium platings do not possess. Please see the photos provided to ascertain the nature of these colors.
  • Dimensions:  This face of this ring measures 7.50 mm north to south (width), and the shoulders taper from 5.50 mm just outside of the central setting to 1.10 mm at base of the shank. This ring rises 7.00 mm from the finger.
  • Weight: A wonderful 2.58 grams
  • Markings:  This ring is marked as "P&M" followed by "18K", and tests as such. P&M is the simplified maker's mark for the company Powers & Mayer Manufacturing Corp. out of New York, New York, which operated between 1896 and 1934.
  • Era:  The diamond itself is believed to date from the late 1920s through the early-mid 1930s, but the mounting is believed to date earlier to the 1910s. This ring is a beautiful mix of late Edwardian and Art Deco glamour.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring is of superior quality, and hails as a rare and remarkably beautiful ring.

The Story:

This ring exhibits all of the qualities for which Edwardian and Art Deco era jewelry is so deeply coveted. Its elegantly geometricized floral openwork setting is a hallmark of the 1910s-1930s, and exists as a tangible window into another time. At once bold and sweet, this ring is equal parts feminine and architectural, an alluring image of the grace and style of the early Jazz Age.

The ring is hallmarked for Powers & Mayer Manufacturing Corp. out of New York, New York, which operated between 1896 and 1934. This jewelry house was more commonly known as Powers & Mayer, and their patents, bulletins, and achievements may be consistently found throughout the jeweler's guild publications of the period, which boasted the latest news of all the leading jewelers who called New York and New Jersey (the top-tier jewelry hub region) home. There is no way to emphasize enough that finding a ring stamped for this company is incredibly rare, making this piece a true heirloom, a true one of a kind, a wholly uncommon piece of history.

The featured diamond is of superior quality, and its color and clarity are intensely desirable to collectors and make this ring an ideal investment piece. Both Old European and Transitional cuts are becoming more and more difficult to find, as many are either being purchased by collectors and/or repurposed or recut by machine into other, contemporary jewelries. This diamond is classified as a Transitional Cut (classified by the GIA as an early Circular Brilliant Cut), and to find an old cut that is this lovely is incredibly rare, and highly sought after.

This diamond's cut represents a very, very brief window of time between the late 1920s and the early 1930s (please be aware that this time range is sometimes debated) when diamond cutters began transitioning from the chunky height of Old European Cut diamonds of the 1890s-1910s to the lower-profile/sleeker spread of Modern Round Brilliant Cut diamonds of the 1940s through today. This diamond is one that survived this sliver of time that was so extremely pivotal to jewelry history. It boasts the chunkiness that is coveted of antique hand-faceted diamonds, in which every facet is broad and wide in geometry creating a dazzling flash that modern stone cuts simply do not possess.

On calculating the carat weight: This ring was sold to the shop as being 0.39 to 0.44 ct. However, those estimations are low and incorrect because they were calculated according to the formula for Modern Round Brilliant (MRB) cut diamonds, and using the spread of the diamond (how wide it measures head-on) to determine a corresponding carat weight. The MRB formula is perfectly appropriate for modern diamond cuts, produced from the late 1940s/1950s, on. But, the MRB formula does not take into consideration the substantial heft of the faceting system of historic Transitional/Early Circular Brilliant diamonds-- of which this diamond is one.

Therefore, we calculate this diamond using the historic formula which takes into consideration the proportions and ratios of historic cuts, including the roughly proportionately smaller table, the medium culet at the base of the diamond, the pavilion's length of 65% or smaller and the internal star length of 50% or smaller. Using the historic-- and inherently more appropriate-- formula, we estimate that this center diamond is actually between 0.51 and 0.55 carat weight. So, while the diamond may have the width (spread) of a modern 0.39-0.44 ct diamond according to its mm measurement across, its faceting system and profile reveals its elegant chunkiness that boosts the diamond's actual carat weight to between 0.51-0.55. Therefore, the conservative estimate of this stone using this historic formula is an average weight estimate of 0.53 ct.

Please kindly keep in mind that different jewelers, different dealers and different appraisers vary in the formula they use to determine the carat weight of a diamond. In order to provide our shoppers with the truest carat weight that we can, we use the most appropriate formula according to the exact cut of the stone present.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
