General Information:

  • Length: 13.75 inches ( 349.25 mm/34.925 cmm) end to end, including both the dog clip and the spring ring
  • Precious Metal Weight: 4.04 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 14 karat white gold (also stamped as such on interior of dog clip/swivel closure). Please keep in mind that this is antique white gold, the historic formula for which meant that some white golds had an ever so slight kiss of warmth in undertone. Against platinum or modern white gold (which is rhodium plated for a silvery-whiteness), this chain will not be as cool/silvery, and will instead have the sublest warmth. However, this is not to be confused with yellow gold, as this chain is not yellow gold.
  • Weight: A very nice weight of 6.28 grams
  • Markings: 14k marked on the interior of dog clip/swivel closure.
  • Era: Estimated to be late Victorian/Edwardian (1900-1919) or early Art Deco (1920-1925); because this piece is not marked with a maker's stamp or date mark, its precise date origin is unknown, though we estimate it to date to between 1900-1925 according to its construction, styling, specific white gold composition, length and per our years of collecting and dealing, and our learned expertise.
  • Buyer Notes: Antique gold watch chains are highly sought after items that are more and more becoming rarer to find, as many have been purchased out of public circulation or have been converted for use as stationary necklaces, bracelets or reimagined as stationary charm holders. As an antique original, we proudly offer this work of craftsmanship as a historic relic of bygone purpose. While these kinds of chains were once used for pocket watches at the upper waist, today these chains are usually worn as ladies’ chokers or double wrapped on the wrist as bracelets. To amp up their wearability, two of such chains may be linked together to create a longer necklace if so desired, or a chain extender may be added to lengthen a single chain. A beautiful heirloom quality piece, this white gold chain is surprisingly versatile and retains its original beauty with great dignity.

The Story:

A jewelry staple with simplistic attention to detail, this antique watch chain is believed to date to around the Edwardian years to the early Art Deco movement. The piece’s refined composition is geometric, very much harkening to the thoughtfulness of Frank Lloyd Wright design.

Twenty-five three-dimensional rectangular bar links punctuate this chain, all with delicate connector links between. The array of links create a slinky, silky feel in the hand and when worn, a hallmark of jewelry design during the first few decades of the 1900s. This serpentine chain was originally designed to append a pocket watch in convenient style. Today, these historic adornments are becoming increasingly rare to source, and even rarer in original condition-- that is, not converted in length or function, as many are.

What makes antique chains so special and so valuable is that the links were each individually hand-soldered together to create the form and function you see today; every single element has wrought by the very talented hand of an artist over a century ago, and constructed link by link, loop by loop and unit by unit to achieve an intricate heirloom quality jewel fortified by utilitarian strength. Photos reveal these soldered connections, and exhibit how chains are simply are not made with such hand-rendered, skilled craftsmanship today.

Of note with this chain is that it no longer retains the original "female" receiving jump ring into which the dog clip on the opposite end could clip. This long-lost ring would have been very simply a slightly larger version of the dainty ring that IS still present, and would have looped into that smaller ring. Fortunately, this lost jump ring is no bother at all to the chain's usability, durability or appearance! Indeed and as pictured, the dog clip very easily slides right onto the smaller ring, ensuring that the chain is perfectly functioning despite this time-earned quirk.

Under a loupe or magnification, one can see that this smaller ring has apparently been used for decades as the primary recipient/closure, as it bears some wear commensurate with age and affectionate use. The price has been fairly set to reflect the loss of this extra ring just as much as the wildly cool, architectural, geometricized 3D bar links that comprise it.

Had the larger jump ring been present, the chain would measure 14 inches end to end, as is the most standard length for this period. Without it present, though, the chain measures 13.75 inches. It fits a wrist as a snug, double-looped bracelet or makes a perfect extender to lengthen another antique chain (or two). If the buyer so desires, they may have a contemporary 14k white gold jump ring added onto the chain by their trusted jeweler post-purchase. This chain's possibilities are as endless as its style.

Specially Negotiated Deals: Items purchased at specially negotiated discounts, deals or prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer are considered final sale, including rates arranged and agreed upon via Facebook, Instagram, email or any other method. Closing deals at special rates reflects a desire by both parties to reach an expeditious and absolute sale. The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
