  • Length: 49-50 inches; designed as an infinity loop with dog clip and slide
  • Precious Metal Weight: About 3.56 dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 10-12k rosy gold
  • Dimensions: The gourmette links measure about 2.40 mm each, and are created as gold-soldered pairs that total 4.80 in length together. The dog clip’s interior diameter measures about 3.5 mm. The slide measures roughly 8.70 x 6.30 mm.
  • Weight: A very desirable weight o 5.53 grams
  • Markings: The interior of the dog clip is stamped with 10K to indicate the metal purity. On shop equipment, this chain tests as between 42% and 50% content, which is between 10k and 12k.
  • Era: This chain’s design, composition, fabrication techniques, marks and style conclude an estimated origin date range of 1870-1880, just past the mid Victorian years. Beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enable us to determine, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range or history than this without knowledge of the piece’s exact provenance.
  • Buyer Notes: Antique Victorian chains are highly collectible, highly desirable jewelry items. They are versatile and practical, and truly timeless while also increasing in value over time. This style also enables the necklace to be a complete look on its own, even when worn without charms or pendants. Its paired-link construction is truly exceptional and very interesting of antique chains that were created by hand. This technique is a wholly unique trait of historic jewelry, and simply does not exist in modern chains. Note the dog clip wear visible in the images, and please view the videos below to better perceive the paired-link construction, and the “flipping” of the links that tends to occur.

Specifications:

  • Center Stone Type: Cultured Pearl
  • Center Stone Count: One (1)
  • Center Stone Dimensions: 1.90 mm (Measured within setting so as to preserve the piece’s integrity)
  • Center Stone Carat Weight: 0.052 ct (Professionally estimated by formula per the specific gravity of cultured pearl)
  • Center Stone Shape: Whole and claw prong-set
  • Center Stone Color: Cream with mild luster orient

The Story:

Crafted during the height of the Victorian period, this lady’s long guard chain would have originally been worn around the neck, and designed to have either a lorgnette (pair of reading or opera spectacles) or hand warmers (fur muff or gloves) attached to the dog clip end. If worn with a pair of glasses, the end with the specs would have been tucked into the waistline. If worn with a warmer, the chain would have been worn like a necklace and looped through a muff’s opening. The slide detail would have allowed the wearer various styling opportunities, as it could slide to create a Y-necklace style in which the chain could appear as a choker with a center drop as desired. It could also be doubled around the neck for a layered effect, and an ornamental fob clipped into the clasp. Such chains were typically worn by adults to the opera and other evenings out, though sometimes worn by little girls so they could keep their mittens within reach.

This long guard is fabricated in rosy gold, stamped as 10k on the interior of the dog clip and tested for verification. Historically, 10-12k gold is nearly always rosy in hue, as the antique chemical alloy for this level purity included more copper than today’s composition. As such, the gold is not a true yellow gold, and is significantly pinker. The links are called gourmette links, a kind of curb link, and boast very intriguing construction: they are handcrafted in solid gold soldered pairs, as can be perceived in photos and when handling. These paired links are then joined together to create the impressive length of the chain. The paired assemblage inclines the links to periodically flip over on themselves, giving the appearance of kinks here and there (please reference the photographs to see this quality). However, they do not actually kink, owing to the paired assemblage itself, as a matter of fact. These tend to fall out when the chain is worn, as there is no defect actually present. This characteristic is worth noting nonetheless.

The necklace is in the infinity style-- note that there are not two end clasps. While the necklace does not ‘open’ in order to lie flat, its length end to end if it did would measure between 49 and 50 inches. This means that, if worn single-looped, it hits well below the natural waist, down to the navel or below depending on the wearer’s proportions. If worn double-looped, it hits mid-sternum. Please note that the slide does not have the grip it once did, and while it does appear to catch as the chain is slid through it, the grip loosens and the slide does not cinch in place. This is very typical of slide chains of this age and make. The bottom loop of the dog clip, in which the chain is affixed, shows some wear, as is to be expected. Likewise, the clip’s mouth doesn’t quite meet and is agape less than 1/100th of an inch. This is a normal effect of age, given the necklace’s 130-150 year life. Even so, the dog clip does indeed shut and hold closed, and can still hold a fob effortlessly. This chain is easy to wear, elegant and classic and a wonderful relic of the past. Aside from wrapping the chain as a bracelet, styling ideas are illustrated in the images provided.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
